Álvaro Mutis’s fantastical, gripping, unnerving tales of the exploits and adventures of Maqroll, the Gaviero, or watchman, an inveterate wanderer both on land and sea, are among the most beloved works of twentieth-century Latin American fiction. Like the stories of Borges, like the novels of Mutis’s great friend García Márquez, they conjure a strange world of their own which also holds up a mirror, disquieting and revelatory, to the everyday world we imagine we know. If Maqroll eventually found his way into prose, he began his career in poetry, and it was as a poet that Mutis first made his name as a writer. This selection of Mutis’s haunting verse, with its evocations, now lush, now stark, of the landscapes of South America, with its prayers to an unknown god, is the first to be published in English. Rendered by Chris Andrews, Edith Grossman, and Alastair Reid, masters of the art of translation, these resonant poems offer a dazzling new entry into the imagination of one of the most original and memorable writers of modern times.

Drinking Homicide And Rebellion In Colonial Mexican Villages written by William B. Taylor and has been published by Stanford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1979 with History categories.

This study analyzes the impact of Spanish rule on Indian peasant identity in the late colonial period by investigating three areas of social behavior. Based on the criminal trial records and related documents from the regions of central Mexico and Oaxaca, it attempts to discover how peasants conceived of their role under Spanish rule, how they behaved under various kinds of street, and how they felt about their Spanish overlords. In examining the character of village uprisings, typical relationships between killers and the people they killed, and the drinking patterns of the late colonial period, the author finds no warrant for the familiar picture of sullen depredation and despair. Landed peasants of colonial Mexico drank moderately on the whole, and mostly on ritual occasions; they killed for personal and not political reasons. Only when new Spanish encroachments threatened their lands and livelihoods did their grievances flare up in rebellion, and these occasions were numerous but brief. The author bolsters his conclusions with illuminating comparisons with other peasant societies.

"Stop, Time, your fast race; /turn back to my lost infancy." With the final poem of this collection, "Upon Turning Twenty One," famed Chicano folklorist Americo Paredes closes a chapter in his life--one written during his formative years from 1932 to 1937--as he grew from a seventeen-year-old boy to a twenty-one year old man. In doing so, the renowned writer looks "toward the unknown future maze." Originally published in 1937 by Libreria Espanola in San Antonio, Texas, this new edition contains the first-ever English translations of the original Spanish poems and an introduction by the translators, scholars and poets in their own right, B. V. Olguin and Omar Vasquez Barbosa. Paredes, who died in 1999 at the age of 84, is widely considered to have been at the forefront of the movement that saw the birth of Chicana/o literary and cultural studies as an academic discipline in the 1970s and 1980s. This collection of poetry written during his teenage years lays the groundwork for themes he explored in later writings: culture conflict, race, and gender relations, materialism, hybridity, and transnationalism. In his youthful, first-person voice, Paredes explores intimate, angst-filled issues relevant to all young people, such as love, memory, and rebellion. Published as part of the Recovering the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage Project Series, this vital volume is a must read for Paredes scholars and those interested in the dynamic intersection of cultures in the 1930s. It contains a literary chronology of Paredes' literary development and includes correspondence, photos, and other materials from the Americo Paredes Papers at the Archival Collections of the Nettie Lee Benson Latin AmericanCollection at the University of Texas at Austin.
