Darwinism In Argentina written by Leila Gómez and has been published by Lexington Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Darwinism in Argentina: Major Texts (1845-1909) brings together essays, letters, short-stories, and public lectures by travelers, scientists, writers, and politicians about Darwin and the theory of evolution in nineteenth century Argentina. This selection of texts provides a thorough overview of the socio-ideological implications of the theory of evolution in South America, as well as the intellectual debate this scientific theory promoted in the discourses of fiction, law, history, and medicine in the formation of modern Argentina. Some writers in this book considered the theory of evolution to be Argentinean because Darwin first conceived his theory traveling in the Beagle, across "the big cemetery of glyptodont and megatherium fossils" on the pampas and in Patagonia. This anthology includes texts from William H. Hudson, Francisco Mu iz, Florentino Ameghino, Eduardo Holmberg, Domingo F. Sarmiento, Hermann Burmeister, the Perito Moreno, Leopoldo Lugones, Jos Mar a Ramos Mej a, and Jos Ingenieros, among others. Many of these texts have not been translated to English or reprinted until this edition, which was originally published with fewer texts in Spanish in 2008. Leila G mez's introduction reconstructs the historical-scientific contexts of the Darwinist debate in Argentina, the role of paleontology as modern discipline in South American countries, and the tensions between metropolitan and local scientific knowledge. Both the anthology and the introduction present a panorama of Darwin and evolution in Argentina, and the complex mechanism of inclusion and exclusion of indigenous, African descendants, mestizos, and immigrants in the modern nation. Darwinism in Argentina provides critical perspectives on evolutionism in South America that will interest students and specialists in literature, history, and science.

Jos Ingenieros written by Maximiliano E. Korstanje and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-03-19 with Social Science categories.

Maximiliano Korstanje presents an overview and analysis of the work of the Argentinian sociologist and physician, José Ingenieros (1877–1925). In fact, José Ingenieros was a seminal scholar who contributed directly to the formation of sociology in Latin America. Born in Palermo, Italy Ingenieros grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He trained in medicine, psychiatry, sociology and philosophy; he devoted much of his life to addressing societal challenges such as mass migration, imperialism, marginality, criminality and social identity. Korstanje takes in turn the key areas of Ingenieros’s work and examines how his thinking can be brought to bear on the social challenges of today. In particular his work on mass migration and the “Other” have echoes in the problems facing many countries in the early twenty-first century. It is a valuable resource for scholars and students looking to better understand this key figure in Argentinian – and Latin American – sociology in the early twentieth century.

The Awakening Of Latin America written by Ernesto Che Guevara and has been published by Seven Stories Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-12-26 with Political Science categories.

This classic anthology on Latin America shows the Argentine-born revolutionary's cultural depth, rigorous intellect, and intense emotional engagement with a continent and its people. In a letter to his mother in 1954, a young Ernesto Guevara wrote, “The Americas will be the theater of my adventures in a way that is much more significant than I would have believed.” In The Awakening of Latin America we have the story of those adventures, charting Che’s evolution from an impressionable young medical student to the “heroic guerrilla,” assassinated in cold blood in Bolivia. Spanning seventeen years, this anthology draws on from his family’s personal archives and offers the best of Che’s writing: examples of his journalism, essays, speeches, letters, and even poems. As Che documents his early travels through Latin America, his involvement in the Guatemalan and Cuban revolutions, and his rise to international prominence under Fidel Castro, we see how his fervent commitment to social justice shaped and was shaped by the continent he called home.
