La celebración del primer centenario de la independencia en las escuelas de la provincia de Cartagena, (1900-1920), es un texto en el que se intenta dar cuenta del lugar de la enseñanza y la construcción de la historia en las localidades, particularmente en Cartagena, durante la conmemoración de su primer centenario de vida independiente. Su autor intenta analizar cuál fue el aporte de los maestros y de los estudiantes a la invención de la historia local, quienes, en la organización de la fiesta centenaria de 1911, por medio de la publicación de cartillas, mapas y anagramas locales, empezaron a transformar, manipular y reconstruir los relatos sobre la independencia de la provincia, presentados en los textos de historia patria nacional. Se trata, precisamente, de mostrar cómo la historia de la independencia de Cartagena, que había sido vista con recelo y como un "error nacional" a lo largo del siglo XIX, intenta ser recuperada y redefinida como una instancia constitutiva de la organización nacional, lo que da lugar al proceso de nacionalización de las epifanías locales. En todo este proceso, sin duda la participación de las escuelas resulta crucial para entender la invención de la historia en las localidades y la celebración de eventos conmemorativos como el del Primer Centenario de la Independencia de la provincia de Cartagena.
