Durante los diecisiete años de la dictadura chilena, más de 370.000 jóvenes varones, casi exclusivamente de hogares humildes, pasaron por los cuarteles como conscriptos. En la primera década del siglo XXI, cerca de 100.000 de ellos comenzaron a romper su silencio y se movilizaron como parte de un movimiento de exconscriptos, buscando pensiones, beneficios y reconocimiento como víctimas del régimen militar. Basado en testimonios, entrevistas, documentos inéditos y notas de campo, este libro analiza las memorias del servicio militar que emergieron con el movimiento en el siglo XXI y que revelan cómo se libraron las guerras de Pinochet en el interior de los cuarteles entre 1973 y 1990. Los exconscriptos no comparten una interpretación del golpe, ni del régimen militar o de su legado, y las grandes narrativas de la “lucha por la memoria” no son suficientes para entender la memoria exconscripta.

Between 1980 and World War II, South America experienced the unsettling first stages of modernization. During this half-century of economic, political, and social change, the armies of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Peru underwent a process of professionalization as European military missions transformed their officer corps into copies of French and German officialdom. In so doing, European officers inculcated their ideals and values, thought and self-perception?their professionalism?in countries historically vulnerable to militarism. ø Based mainly on a comprehensive examination of European and South American military literature, this study describes the significant contribution of European military professionalism to South American professional militarism. Nunn not only details the workings of the French missions in Brazil and Peru and the German missions in Argentina and Chile, but gives great emphasis to the themes and topics that most concerned the European mentors and their overseas disciples. He demonstrates convincingly that much of their professional literature was based on a yearning for an idealized past, discontent with an unsatisfactory present, and apprehension about a future that might threaten the most cherished of traditional officer-corps principles and aims. ø The study ends with World War II, yet is makes an important contribution to our understanding of South American history since 1940. The military organizations of the four countries considered here confronted what they perceived to be the major problems of their modernizing nations with solutions learned from their European teachers. Since 1940, they have resorted to golpes de estado?most notably the post-1964 institutional golpes?in order to impose forcibly some of those same solutions. Thus, despite increased U.S. influence, many of the programs implemented by military regimes in the latter half of this century bear the indelible stamp of "yesterday's soldiers."

Aunque por el título pueda parecerlo, este no es un libro sobre la historia de Galicia. Es un libro hecho desde Galicia que versa sobre una forma violenta de tomar el poder para derribar una democracia pluripartidista en la Europa de los años treinta y que analiza cómo funcionó el cuarto de ensayo de una dictadura totalitaria que se consolidó en tiempos del fascismo. Como el franquismo fue el único régimen dictatorial salido de las cenizas de una guerra total, enmarcar estas singularidades en los procesos de su tiempo y contextualizarlas es fundamental para aspirar a abordar un estudio más amplio. Detrás del golpe podría decirse que hay mucha más acción militar que reacción política por el escaso peso social con el que contó. Pero la acción militar requirió la construcción de un proyecto político que, a medida que se dilató el golpe de estado y se convirtió en guerra, ya no pudo ser el especificado en las Instrucciones de Mola y su inconcreta dictadura republicana. Esta evolución tuvo su reflejo en los territorios que cayeron primero en poder de los golpistas. Sin entender cómo se desarrolló en estos territorios no podremos comprender la lógica de la dictadura impuesta en el resto del Estado. Un trabajo coral que pretende aportar una nueva perspectiva a la construcción del franquismo desde su origen –el golpe de Estado– y que incluye los territorios que cayeron en poder de los golpistas en julio de 1936, los cuales muy a menudo han quedado obviados del análisis historiográfico.
