Los Seminarios de Arquitectura Latinoamericana -SAL- se iniciaron como reacción critica a las crisis de pensamiento de la arquitectura moderna internacional. Sus argumentos se establecieron sobre interrogantes en torno a las propuestas particulares de la arquitectura continental.La actividad de los SAL ha transitado por diversos rumbos durante algo más de cinco lustros. Es un periodo extenso para este tipo de encuentros continentales: los temas y las condiciones históricas han mostrado profundas transformaciones; los protagonistas -organizadores, participantes, asistentes- han cambiado sus roles y compromisos. Al impulso del paso del tiempo, las discusiones SAL se han hecho diversas en sus polémicas, tonos y propuestas. Las huellas del trasegar de los SAL han quedado marcadas en las obras -escritas, dibujadas y construidas- de la arquitectura y la ciudad latinoamericana. Este texto señala algunas de ellas e invita a reflexionar sobre las condiciones históricas en que se produjeron. La vigencia y continuidad de los SAL están necesariamente ligadas al análisis reflexivo de las huellas que nos ha dejado el tiempo. Esa es la tarea con la que busca contribuir este libro.

La publicación Redes intelectuales: Arte y política en América Latina reúne el trabajo de once académicos que durante dos años reflexionaron en, sobre y desde la red acerca del tema de arte y política en América Latina. A partir de poner en común elementos que los diferentes participantes habían identificado en su trabajo anterior como generadores de grupos de discusión, se empezó a analizar a nivel colectivo la consolidación y expansión del pensamiento en red en el arte latinoamericano, especialmente temas relacionados con política. Se partió de la relectura de textos producidos en aquellas ciudades que focalizaron la discusión, convirtiéndose en nodos protagónicos de la red.1 En primera instancia, se estudiaron las relaciones históricas establecidas en América Latina por diferentes pensadores a través de correspondencia epistolar, artículos en publicaciones periódicas locales y eventos que reunieron a algunos de estos intelectuales. La investigación se organizó inicialmente bajo dos ejes temáticos generales: Redes latinoamericanas de vanguardia para estudiar las décadas de 1920 y 1930 y Redes de solidaridad continental: Arte, intelectuales y activismo político para hacerlo con las décadas de 1970 y 1980. Los escritos que aparecen en esta publicación permiten visualizar cómo las redes estudiadas fueron innovadoras en la medida que se cuestionó fuertemente el impulso tradicional de buscar modelos extranjeros de pensamiento y se les dio importancia al trabajo y a las preguntas que se estaban haciendo pensadores y artistas latinoamericanos en la construcción de un nuevo modelo.

Argentinean philosopher, theologian, and historian Enrique Dussel understands the present international order as divided into the "culture of the center" -- by which he means the ruling elite of Europe, North America, and Russia -- and "the peoples of the periphery" -- by which he means the populations of Latin America, Africa, and part of Asia, and the oppressed classes (including women and children) throughout the world. In 'Philosophy of Liberation,' he presents a profound analysis of the alienation of peripheral peoples resulting from the imperialism of the center for more than five centuries. Dussel's aim is to demonstrate that the center's historic cultural, military, and economic domination of poor countries is 'philosophically' founded on North Atlantic onthology. By expressing supposedly universal knowledge, European philosophies, argues Dussel, have served to equate the cultural standards, modes of behavior, and rationalistic orientation of the West with human nature and to condemn the unique characteristics of peripheral peoples as "nonbeing, nothing, chaos, irrationality." Hence, Western philosophies have historically legitimated and hidden the domination that oppressed cultures have suffered at the hands of the center. Dussel probes multinational corporations, the communications media, and the armies of the center with their counterparts among the Third World elite. The creation of a just world order in the future, according to Dussel, hinges on the liberation of the periphery, based on a philosophy that is able to "think the world" from the perspective of the poor and to reclaim the Third World's distinct cultural inheritance, which is imbedded in the popular cultures of the poor. Apart from the liberation of the periphery, there will be no future: "the center will feed itself on the sameness it has ingrained within itself. The death of the child, of the poor, will be its own death." This is a disquieting but stimulating book for scholars and advanced students of philosophy, ethics, liberation theology, and global politics.
