Con este volumen se inicia una colección de textos, coordinada por el Departamento de Infraestructuras del Transporte y Territorio de la UPC, cuyo objetivo es aportar una visión de la construcción de la ciudad y del territorio desde la perspectiva de la construcción de sus redes de infraestructura, actividad primordial de la ingeniería civil, con efectos cada vez más contundentes. El libro se centra en el campo de la urbanística y pretende cubrir un vacío en la formación de los ingenieros, los cuales con frecuencia perciben las infraestructuras tan sólo desde sus aspectos funcionales, olvidando su enorme potencial como organizadoras del territorio y su papel esencial como soporte acumulativo del espacio urbano. De forma complementaria, la presente obra colabora a asentar unas bases epistemológicas comunes con otros profesionales, fundamentalmente arquitectos y geógrafos, retomando así una colaboración que ha sido fructífera en los momentos más relevantes de la evolución de la ciudad actual, tal como se subraya en el libro. La Historia ha mostrado cómo las infraestructuras bien concebidas fueron capaces de adecuar armónicamente la capacidad de un territorio y los requerimientos del desarrollo de una sociedad. El alejamiento progresivo de esa premisa ha llevado, demasiado a menudo, a una ingeniería ?megalómana?, sin límites, que ha producido en amplios sectores de la sociedad una actitud de rechazo, transformada demasiado fácilmente en conservadurismo y negación del cambio. Pero Ingeniería y Ecología están llamadas a entenderse, porque ambas son ciencias del cambio y de la adaptación. La interpretación de los nuevos fenómenos urbanos y ambientales, sin duda, constituyen para la teoría de la arquitectura y la ciudad, un nuevo enfoque que ha de proporcionar criterios de valor para el proyecto de la arquitectura y la ciudad. Con el tiempo y mientras la realidad lo imponía se ha ido perdiendo la fe en el control de la forma de la ciudad. Parece, por eso, útil dedicar un estudio sobre el papel de la arquitectura en la construcción de la forma urbana como paradigma de referencia del proyecto arquitectónico y como forma de profundizar en el significado de la dimensión urbana de la arquitectura. Cuando el proyectista no posee el conocimiento y la capacidad de análisis e interpretación de lo dado, la forma producida resulta vacía de contenido y de realidad, sin referencias históricas y culturales, un mero gesto. Se propone estudiar los fenómenos arquitectónicos en la escala urbana utilizando los datos históricos y con herramientas, indiscriminadamente, teóricas y críticas. Se trata de una lectura dentro de una estructura transhistórica que se basa en tres conceptos: el trazado, la estructura y la imagen. Siguiendo estas guías, se reconduce el estudio de la arquitectura en relación con la forma urbana, de las tipologías edificatorias, por ejemplo, con las calles, las plazas u otros conjuntos urbanos comprobando los efectos de esta relación sobre la morfología y la iconología urbana.

Este libro analiza las obras del Movimiento Moderno acentuando la búsqueda de la transparencia como un hecho que las une, a través de la expresión de la fachada de la estructura, en forma de retículo, analizando sus principios, transformaciones y su vigencia en distintos contextos, en especial el de Chile. La presente publicación nace a partir de una tesis doctoral en «Composición arquitectónica» que el autor realizó en el Politécnico de Milán. Se han incorporado, además, investigaciones sobre el tema y los talleres que el autor realizó en la Universidad IUAV de Venecia y en la Universidad Católica del Norte, desarrollando proyectos a partir de la grilla tridimensional. El aspecto más interesante de este libro es que muestra la grilla como «entramado espacial», trasladando la malla cartesiana al espacio, convirtiéndose en un elemento figurativo y, al mismo tiempo, transformando la estructura -el dato técnico- en forma arquitectónica. Las arquitecturas del Movimiento Moderno conquistan, a través del retículo, una dimensión «ideal» que refleja cómo en las grandes arquitecturas, la visión estética del construir trasciende el dato constructivo y técnico, salvaguardando la unidad de la obra. Es en virtud de esta dimensión «ideal» que las obras del Movimiento Moderno, como faros solitarios y suspendidos, continúan iluminando el territorio de la arquitectura.

Global climate change and the war in Ukraine have put energy back on the agenda for Europe in a way that has not been seen since the oil crisis of the 1970s. But the economics and business of supplying energy to Europe has a long and rich history going back to the nineteenth century. This book explores changes in energy markets, strategies, firms and investments during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The primary focus is on manufactured gas—the gas that was initially produced from coal distillation until new ways of manufacturing gas emerged after the Second World War. The expert contributors to this volume draw on their extensive research and utilise primary sources to explore a wide range of issues, including technological adaptation, market regulation, energy investments (particularly the role of foreign capital), gas consumption and supply issues. The case studies are particularly drawn from Spain, France and Italy, but the authors provide a comparative and global perspective to consider the wider context. This book analyses the origin and evolution of the water supply service in Andalusia (southern Spain) between 1800 and 2020 from several perspectives.
