La igualdad de oportunidades entre hombres y mujeres en el mundo del trabajo, que se sustenta en diversas normas internacionales del trabajo, es una de las metas principales de la accion de la oit. Las principales normas esenciales en esta materia son: 1) el convenio sobre igualdad de remuneracion, 1951 (num. 100), 2) convenio sobre la discriminiacion (empleo y ocupacion), 1958 (num. 111), 3) convenio sobre los trabajadores con responsabilidades familiares, 1981 (num. 156), 4) convenio sobre la proteccion de la maternidad, 1919 (num. 3), 5) convenio sobre la proteccion de la maternidad (rewvisado), 1952 (num. 103), 6) convenio sobre la politica del empleo, 1964 (num. 122) que impulsa la formulacion de politicas que favorezcan el pleno empleo, productivo y libremente elegido, 7) convenio sobre desarrollo de los recursos humanos, 1975 (num. 142) que excluye expresamente toda forma de discriminacion en su ejecucion, y 8) recomendacion sobre desarrrollo de los recursos humanos, 1975 (num. 150). Acompaña al convenio 142 y estipula la igualdad de oportunidades para mujeres y hombres en la formacion y el empleo.
