Peni, el autor y protagonista, ha tardado bastante tiempo en reunir todos sus papeles, datos y recuerdos, pero por fin ha conseguido terminar su escrito. Decide mostrárselo a P., la persona en la que más confía para ello, y acuerdan irse con el coche unos días en dirección a La Rioja, para poder revisar a fondo el texto, lejos del bullicio de la ciudad. Mientras se deleitan con la gastronomía y los vinos, Peni le va leyendo a P. sus folios, que hablan del fantástico viaje en velero que inició en Singapore y en el que, tras recorrer el mar de Java, se adentró en el océano índico hasta Madagascar; desde allí sorteó el canal de Mozambique hasta Sudáfrica, para continuar desde Ciudad del Cabo, atravesando el océano Atlántico, hasta llegar con el pecho henchido de satisfacción a Rio de Janeiro. Una vez allí, y ante el periodo de reposo que se imponía en el barco, decidió continuar viaje por su cuenta y recorrer, por tierra y aire esta vez, algunas zonas de Brasil, una buena parte de la Patagonia argentina, Chile con su increíble isla de Pascua (Rapa Nui), el sorprendente desierto de Atacama y, por último, algunas ciudades de Perú, con el eterno Machu Pichu como broche final a un viaje que le ocupó alrededor de dos años. Durante el recorrido, al tiempo que disfrutan de los manjares locales y se van sumergiendo en aquel otro periplo, mucho más exótico, se producen situaciones que dan un toque de emoción añadida al ya de por sí espectacular viaje relatado en su texto. Aventuras, complicidades, lugares increíbles y algunas sorpresas, en un viaje apasionantes dentro de otro viaje.
