Este volumen es un breve bosquejo de las religiones que modelan el pensamiento hindú, y están destinadas a contribuir al futuro desenvolvimiento del vasto e importante país conocido geográficamente con el nombre de India. En este país (comprendiendo Birmania y Ceilán) conviven frente a frente las grandes religiones del mundo: el hinduismo, el budismo, el cristianismo y el islamismo. También existen todavía fragmentos de la en otro tiempo pujante religión de Zoroastro, así como las no muy extendidas pero importantes religiones del jainismo y sikhismo. Aparte de estas siete religiones, no hay creencia viva de intrínseca importancia, por más que tal o cual fragmento de una u otra de las religiones enumeradas, el culto de los antepasados, por ejemplo, dirija el pensamiento humano en otros países. Así es que el suelo de la India sustenta los prosélitos de las distintas religiones del mundo y en él florece el tronco del que todas arrancaron: la Teosofía. La singular circunstancia de que en la India se hallen reunidas el tronco y las siete ramas vivas, da capitalísima importancia al problema religioso, y determina que se influyan recíprocamente las diversas religiones; pues o bien han de vivir en armonía enriqueciéndose unas a otras, o han de aniquilarse mutuamente. En la India ha de resolverse el problema religioso del Universo. El objeto de este volumen es incitar a dichas religiones a convivir en buen acuerdo por su mutua comprensión y reunirlas todas en el seno de la Teosofía. —Annie Besant
