Las tortugas marinas representan a los organismos mas primitivos e iniciaron su evolucion en el periodo Triasico, a principios del Mesozoico, hace por lo menos 200 millones de anos. Fueron muy abundantes en el pasado pero en el ultimo siglo sus poblaciones se han visto reducidas drasticamente (Marquez, 2002) Entre los principales factores que afectan negativamente las poblaciones estan los depredadores naturales, los abusos y la sobreexplotacion del hombre, los cambios en sus habitats, las enfermedades infecciosas y parasitosis. A pesar de su importancia como especie ancestral en peligro de extincion, la cual se debe proteger, y al papel que desempena dentro del equilibrio del inmenso sistema marino, no se cuenta con estudios cientificos para determinar parametros que nos permitan valorar la salud de las tortugas marinas y las alteraciones en la salud que pueden ocurrir debido a los cambios en sus habitat."
