From 1940 to 1989, nearly every hotel on the Las Vegas Strip employed a full-time band or orchestra. After the late 1980s, when control of the casinos changed hands from independent owners to corporations, almost all of these musicians found themselves unemployed. Played Out on the Strip traces this major shift in the music industry through extensive interviews with former musicians. In 1989, these soon-to-be unemployed musicians went on strike. Janis McKay charts the factors behind this strike, which was precipitated by several corporate hotel owners moving to replace live musicians with synthesizers and taped music, a strategic decision made in order to save money. The results of this transitional period in Las Vegas history were both long-lasting and far-reaching for the entertainment industry. With its numerous oral history interviews and personal perspectives from the era, this book will appeal to readers interested in Las Vegas history, music history, and labor issues.

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Pages: 24. Chapters: Elvis Presley, Violetta Villas, Verne Byers, Herbie Phillips, Jim Root, Paul Taylor, James Moody, Frank Sinatra, Jr., Carl Fontana, Kym Purling, Carl Saunders. Excerpt: Elvis Aaron Presley (, 1935 -, 1977) was one of the most popular American singers of the 20th century. A cultural icon, he is widely known by the single name Elvis. He is often referred to as the "King of Rock and Roll" or simply "the King." Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, Presley moved to Memphis, Tennessee, with his family at the age of 13. He began his career there in 1954 when Sun Records owner Sam Phillips, eager to bring the sound of African-American music to a wider audience, saw in Presley the means to realize his ambition. Accompanied by guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, Presley was one of the originators of rockabilly, an uptempo, backbeat-driven fusion of country and rhythm and blues. RCA Victor acquired his contract in a deal arranged by Colonel Tom Parker, who would manage the singer for over two decades. Presley's first RCA single, "Heartbreak Hotel," released in January 1956, was a number one hit. He became the leading figure of the newly popular sound of rock and roll with a series of network television appearances and chart-topping records. His energized interpretations of songs, many from African American sources, and his uninhibited performance style made him enormously popular-and controversial. In November 1956, he made his film debut in Love Me Tender. Conscripted into military service in 1958, Presley relaunched his recording career two years later with some of his most commercially successful work. He staged few concerts, however, and, guided by Parker, proceeded to devote much of the 1960s to making Hollywood movies and soundtrack albums, most of them critically derided. In 1968, after seven years away from the...

When you visit Las Vegas, you expect to get the best entertainment in the world. Well, why not. You are in "The Entertainment Capitol of The World." Well, do I have news for you! Las Vegas casinos not only want to take your cash, they are also ripping you off when it comes to music entertainment. This town has more corn in it than Iowa. Could you please pass the salt and butter? You will understand the meaning of this joke as you continue reading. In the good old days, Vegas entertainment was at its best. Who can forget the indelible Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack? The majestic King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley crowned the viva into "Viva Las Vegas." Today, we still have the impressionable Mr. Las Vegas, Wayne Newton. Back in the old days, Entertainment Directors were privy to good music. The Entertainment Directors today, for lack of better words, are incompetent. They have zero knowledge of the entertainment business. Most of these people are in charge of the Food and Beverage Department of the casinos. How in the heck can they distinguish a "bottle of beer" from a great "entertainment act"? Entertainment Directors have a business scam of accepting kick back money. The stone cold truth of Las Vegas is politics and money. Forget sleeping with the right person to get a job. It is not applicable in this city. It's all about kissing ass and "SHOW ME THE MONEY!" So who finds the entertainment acts that are in casino lounges? We can thank those wonderful people who call themselves "agents." I call a majority of them thieves. They are in the same category as used car salespersons. They sell lemons. They are laughing all the way to the bank. This is when the amusement park fun begins for me. Bette Davis once recited in a movie, "Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy ride." You might think I am vindictive and bitter towards agents and entertainment directors. I have been a victim of these vultures along with many other musicians. It is an insult to my musical intelligence. Unfortunately, I can not reveal names of casinos, Entertainment Directors, agents, sex and ethnicity of musicians. I do not want to end up in a court of law down the road. I will get satisfaction exposing their scams. It's a dirty job, but someone has to clean the scum off the toilet.

In Las Vegas, some performers play to a packed house; for others, the seats are mostly empty. But no matter the headcount, in Sin City, great music was made famous by the Rat Pack, the King of Rock 'n' Roll, and the King of Pop.What's it like to experience this long tradition when you live in an area saturated with music?A collection of original essays, Neon Riffs and Lounge Acts: Las Vegas Writers on Music presents readers with the blistered fingers, the broken drumsticks, and the late nights and early mornings of life on and off the stage. In this book, you'll taste the salty sweat caused by 100 burningbulbs and the sweetness of a backstage bowl of M&Ms (sans the brown ones), an indication of whether the concert promoter actually studied aband's complicated contract. And you'll discover the emotional reality of "living for the music" in the heart of a throbbing mass-entertainmentcenter.This is the 13th volume of the annual Las Vegas Writes anthology, in which 13 local authors express what it sounds - and feels - like to embrace the rattle and hum of bright-light city musicality, exploring what it means to enjoy hard rock and soft ballads in a desert-locked entertainment capital where art and commerce clash and struggle to coexist.Las Vegas Writes is a program of Nevada Humanities, published by Huntington Press, with support from the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District, and part of the Las Vegas Book Festival. Las Vegas Writes anthology is an annual collection of writings by local authors focused on a theme connected to Las Vegas. Singular and star-studded writings on America's neon-lit playground At once a Technicolor wonderland and the embodiment of American mythology, Las Vegas exists at the Ground Zero of a reverence for risk-taking and the transformative power of a winning hand. Jake Johnson edits a collection of short essays and flash ideas that probes how music-making and soundscapes shape the City of Second Chances. Treating topics ranging from Cher to Cirque de Soleil, the contributors delve into how music and musicians factored in the early development of Vegas's image; the role of local communities of musicians and Strip mainstays in sustaining tensions between belief and disbelief; the ways aging showroom stars provide a sense of timelessness that inoculates visitors against the outside world; the link connecting fantasies of sexual prowess and democracy with the musical values of Liberace and others; considerations of how musicians and establishments gambled with identity and opened the door for audience members to explore Sin City-only versions of themselves; and the echoes and energy generated by the idea of Las Vegas as it travels across the country. Contributors: Celine Ayala, Kirstin Bews, Laura Dallman, Joanna Dee Das, James Deaville, Robert Fink, Pheaross Graham, Jessica A. Holmes, Maddie House-Tuck, Jake Johnson, Kelly Kessler, Michael Kinney, Carlo Lanfossi, Jason Leddington, Janis McKay, Sam Murray, Louis Niebur, Lynda Paul, Arianne Johnson Quinn, Michael M. Lucifer, the Fallen One. Once a chief angel, Lucifer led the praise to God associated with song. It would only be fitting for him to be the leader of Rock music. Before recorded history, musical instruments made of reed flutes and tabrets made up what is known of Lucifer's body. The sounds were a tool calling on different types of evil entities. Dark spirits turned on God's goodness, forming an alliance with Lucifer, making music an integral part of their mission on the souls of men. Adding strength to the sorcery, astrologers emphasized Lucifer's brilliance by associating him in the Vulgate Bible with Venus and Aurora, the Goddess of Dawn, in Isaiah 14: 12-15. The opposite of evil is l-i-v-e.
