Laser-initiated breakdown of N2, 02, and Ar has been investigated st sub-atmospheric pressures using a pulsed (10 ns) Nd:yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser at 1.06 micrometers. Breakdown thresholds have been determined from 3 to 760 torr and spectral analysis of the plasma emission has been carried out over the range 300-600 nm. Sharp spectral features arising from highly excited singly and multiply charged ions are reported, as well as an underlying continuum at intermediate pressure. Time resolved measurements indicate a complex kinetic dynamic optical behavior. (Author).

Laser multiphoton, mass and photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to investigate the energy level structure and photophysics of oxygen and other atmospheric gases. Particular emphasis was placed on determining the location, predissociation and photoionization processes of the previously unknown lower ns and nd gerade Rydberg states and their interactions with valence states. A shape resonance in the ionization continuum near threshold was found to play a large role in inducing non-Franck-Condon transitions. Optimum transitions for production of vibrationally state-selected O2+ ions were found. The effects of dissociation continua and strongly mixed Rydberg-valence states as intermediates in multiphoton processes were demonstrated and explored. Oxygen, Atmospheric physics, Rydberg states, Laser spectroscopy, Multiphoton spectroscopy, Photoelectron spectroscopy, Photoionization, Shape resonances. (jes).

This book is devoted to the most efficient method of obtaining spectroscopic parameters characterising the absorption of microwave radiation by the Earth’s atmosphere. It explores why this field of science is interesting and important for humanity, and details the basics of gas phase molecular spectroscopy. The book also shows the advantages of the resonator spectroscopy technique for quantitative molecular analysis, and reviews the best-known investigations of diagnostic atmospheric lines and the continuum in the millimetre and submillimetre-wave range. It will appeal to a wide range of specialists in the fields of spectroscopy, atmospheric physics, and millimetre and submillimetre-wave techniques, and will be helpful for lecturers and students concerned with these specialised courses.

This volume contains the lectures presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Frontiers of Laser Spectroscopy of Gases" held in the Hotel Golf Mar, Vimeiro, near Torres Vedras, Portugal from 30 March to 10 April 1987. The objective of the meeting was to take stock of the recent technological developments involving lasers and to assess their impact on spectroscopy. The whole range of wavelengths from the far infrared through to the extreme ultraviolet was covered. In addition, specific applications to both atoms and molecules were described. Indeed, one of the most successful and pleasant aspects of the Institute was the joint participation of atomic physicists and molecular spectro scopists, who meet all too rarely these days. The Institute also succeeded in covering a wide time span from the very earliest days of lasers to some of the very latest developments in both lasers and their applications to spectroscopy. There were 14 invited lecturers, giving a total of 40 lectures, and 89 other participants at the Institute. Each of the invited lecturers has contributed a chapter to this volume. In addition, on Thursday 2nd April a special one-day session was held in the Chemistry Department at the University of Coimbra to mark the retirement of Professor Dr. F.

By now it has been nearly twenty years since the pioneering studies at the MIT-Lincoln Laboratories, Lexington, USA, demonstrated the unique capabilities of lead salt tunable diode lasers (TDL) for infrared absorption spectroscopy. The progress in the use of TDL instrumentation for a wide variety of scientific applications was described by a great number of papers since, however, comparatively few meetings were specifically devoted to this subject. In 1980 the conference on "High Resolution Infrared Spectroscopy Applications and Developments" at the National Bureau of Standards in Gaithersburg, USA, reviewed the state of the art of tunable diode lasers together with Fourier Transform Spectroscopy and other laser spectroscopic techniques. Three years later in 1983 the SPIE Conference in San Diego, USA, dedicated one meeting to "Tunable Diode Laser Development and Spectroscopy" Applications. It appeared appropriate after a further interval of three years to organize another meeting about this quickly advancing field. In November of 1986 an International Symposium on "Monitoring of Gaseous Pollutants by Tunable Diode Lasers" was organized by and held at the Fraunhofer-Insti tut fuer Physikalische Messtechnik in Freiburg, FRG. The main emphasis of this conference was put on the applications of TDL techniques to the solution of problems of environmental relevance : The measurement of atmospheric trace gases and the monitoring of exhaust gases from automobile and power plant stack emitters. The state of diode laser development and application of TDL instruments to scientific molecular spectroscopy were not directly subjects of the meeting.
