Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

From the Author's Preface. When we were children (which was somewhere about 1820), we were presented with fairy tales at New-Year for our amusement. By whom they were written mattered little; provided they kept us still for an hour without quarrelling or breaking things, the book was thought a good one, and nothing more was asked of the author. Since that time a great change has taken place. Fairy tales now hold a prominent place in literature. Like great noblemen, they have their pedigree and history. They treat of geography, astronomy, and zoology, and will very soon include philosophy and religion. Analysis has appeared; farewell to jollity. An ancient muse, of whom we must speak no ill, because she is a lady, and of uncertain age, and also because she is too often in the right -- Science, since we must call her by her name-with her long fingers, hooked nose, and great round goggles, is prying into everything. We can no longer laugh at an ogre without being lacking in respect to the god Orcus; Riquet with the Tuft is nothing but the Winter Solstice; and the White Cat, in her enchanted castle, is the nymph Calisto, or, rather, the Great Bear in person. A plague on our grandnephews; they are too wise for us old fellows! For my part, I, too, could invent theories as well as others, if I saw fit. With the protection and support of a respectable political coterie I should stand a good chance of admission to the Academy of Mother Goose; for I have her blood in my veins. I know what fairy tales are. I have tried to make them, and have thereby learned a great truth, namely, that these tales are not manufactured to order. The brightest man is put to his wit's end when he undertakes the task. At most, he invents some allegory as innocent as it is transparent; he tells a story at which he himself is the first to laugh, and which does not for an instant beguile his readers, however young. I therefore hold it as a maxim that the more sense a man has, the more insipid and tedious are his fairy tales....

An Illustrated Children's Book The title of the book is The Last Fairy Tale, the subtitle of the book is A Very Fishy Story. It is designated for juvenile (0-12) but the humorous story is appropriate for all ages. The book written in rhyme, tells why fairies no longer exist. It begins by describing all the many ways fairies were not actually very helpful to people. It stresses the point that it is not really helpful in life to have things just given to you. One is better off if one has to do things for oneself. The story tells how the fish of long ago were very smart, much smarter than they are now. The fish saw the damage the fairies were doing to people by just making their wishes come true without any effort on the person's part. The fish then decided that for the sake of everybody, the fairies had to go. They met with the fairy king, and tricked him by telling him what every fairy most desired. That there was a place were people did not want their wishes granted. Of course there is no such place as that, but the fairies believed the fish, and headed out in mass to this wonderful island. Fairies an just "pop in" anywhere, but over water they have to fly, and as the fairies flew one the rivers, ponds, lakes, and oceans, the fish jumped up and ate them whole. The last to go the fairy king cursed the fish and took away their intelligence. Though some say they just got tired of thinking. The story ends with the moral that stresses the importance of self relience.
