The 1927 opening of the Holland Tunnel meant that a flood of cars and trucks leaving Manhattan bound for points west were dumped into the streets of Jersey City and the Meadowlands. The answer was to create America¿s first superhighway connecting New York with the U.S. The $40 million project had the backing of Frank Hague, one of the most powerful political bosses of his day, and by 1930 all but the last three miles had been built. Completing that final link, now known as the Pulaski Skyway, touched off a labor war that pitted Hague against the powerful union boss Teddy Brandle, and led to a sensational murder trial.
