The Proterozoic terrains of South Scandinavia and the Grenville Province in North-America have many common features : Regional high grade metamorphism (Granulite-facies), anorthosites, etc. They are separated by the Caledonian orogeny and, above all, by the Atlantic Ocean. During the time of the great continental drift controversy, few people were ready to admit that both sides on the Atlantic were once an unique province. Now everybody agrees on the Post-paleozoic age of the Atlantic and, consequently, on the intrinsic homogeneity of the much older. rocks which occur around it. But a detailed comparison is not easy. The Grenville Province is much larger than South Scandinavia, both regions have been investigated by a great number of different schools, using various methods, approaches and concepts. After several attempts, and long discussion, it was felt by a small group of individuals, that literature study would not be enough and that nothing could re place the direct contact, in the field, of specialists who had a first hand knowledge of all involved regions. The formula of a NATO Advanced Study Institute, which gives a unique opportunity to meet and mix people of various origin and levels, came almost by itself. Much work was needed, much help has been obtained, as detailed in the "Acknowledgements".

The classical Appalachian, Caledonian, Hercynian, and Mauritanide orogens are now only segments of a once-continuous Paleozoic mountain belt which has been fragmented during Mesozoic-Cenozoic formation of the North Atlantic Ocean. These segments are major parts of the countries surrounding the North Atlantic - most of which are members of NATO. The aim of this NATO conference was to evaluate these fragments in terms of their pre-Mesozoic positions, and to attempt a synthesis of their geologic evolution on an international and orogen-wide scale. Geologists who have studied these scattered remnants have been separated by both geography and discipline. Orogen-wide syntheses have beeen attempted in the past by individuals who are specialists not only in discipline but also in geography; therefore, these attempts have not been satisfactory to everyone. This conference brought together the foremost specialists in different disciplines from each country. They attempted to teach other specialists, not only in their own fields, but in other disciplines, about regional variations and particular problems. The resulting international cross-fertilization, both within and between speciaLties, enriched individual workers and helped to provide a multi-disciplinary overview of the orogen.

The NAG-TEC project was a collaborative effort by the British Geological Survey, the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland, the Geological Survey of Ireland, the Geological Survey of the Netherlands, the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland, the Geological Survey of Norway, Iceland GeoSurvey and the Faroese Geological Survey (Jarðfeingi), along with a number of academic partners and significant support from industry. The main focus was to investigate the tectonic evolution of the region with a particular emphasis on basin evolution along conjugate margins. A key outcome was the development of a new tectonostratigraphic atlas and database that includes comprehensive geological and geophysical information relevant for understanding the Devonian to present evolution of the NE Atlantic margins. These provide the foundation upon which ongoing research and exploration of the area can build. This Special Publication provides some of the first scientific results and analysis based on the project, including regional stratigraphic analysis and correlations, crustal structure and interpretation of geophysical data sets, plate kinematics and the evolution of igneous provinces.

Avalonian and Cadomian Geology of the North Atlantic aims to provide region by region syntheses of those terranes which are believed to have once formed part of the Late Proterozoic Avalonian-Cadomian belt. The belt originally comprised a series of volcanic arcs and marginal basins formed during the period c. 700-500 Ma ago, producing a range of calc-alkaline volcanics and intrusives and marginal basin sediments partly founded on continental basement rocks. Originally about 9000 km long, the belt is made up of a number of terranes later separated by the Caledonian orogeny (c. 500- 400 Ma), Variscan orogeny (c. 325 Ma), and the recent opening ofthe Atlantic Ocean (c. 70 Ma). The rocks therefore are now located on both sides of the Atlantic, as far apart as Florida and Czechoslovakia. A possible modern analogue for the Avalonian-Cadomian belt may be the present-day Western Pacific margins. We believe that a synthesis such as this provides the basis for correlation of the timing of events and hence improves our understanding of the underlying tectonic framework of the belt. This book developed from the recognition of, first, our own lack of knowledge of contemporaneous events outwith Armorica, and, second, the likelihood that other researchers working on individual areas or terranes do so in relative isolation. We have therefore commissioned chapters from researchers considered to be experts on their own particular areas.

The Key To Earth History written by Peter Doyle and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-06-08 with Science categories.

The Key to Earth History introduces students to the basic tools used by geologists to reconstruct the Earth's history, and shows how these tools can be used to chart the pattern of global environmental change since the formation of the Earth some 4600 million years ago. It tells a story of mountain building, climate change and of the evolution of life, and uses the North Atlantic region (Europe and North America) as a study area to illustrate this story. Divided into two parts, the book shows how stratigraphy is the key to understanding the history of the Earth. The first part examines the basic stratigraphical methods used to establish, date and interpret the rock record as the product of a series of events whithin Earth history. The second part presents the results obtained by geologists, who have used these stratigraphical tools to reconstruct the pattern of global environmental change through geological time and focuses on the geological evolution of the North Atlantic region. The Key to Earth History is essential reading for geologists, geographers and environmental scientists, as well as to all those interested in the story of the planet. "The authors provide no one with an alibi for bad stratigraphic teaching!" —Geoscientist "The aims of this introductory textbook are to explain the process and pattern of Earth history, to generate interest and enthusiasm, to make stratigraphy fun and exciting! These aims are admirably achieved." —The Holocene "This is a great little book! I found that, not only was everything covered, but that it was covered in a refreshing, readable, no-nonsense fashion." —Earth Science Reviews "The Key to Earth History really should be compulsory reading for all ... geology students." —Geologie
