Stability And Control Of Airplanes And Helicopters written by Edward Seckel and has been published by Academic Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-10 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Stability and Control of Airplanes and Helicopters deals with aircraft flying qualities that determine the stability and control of airplanes and helicopters. It includes problems based on real aircraft, selected to represent the gamut from simple to complicated, and from conventional utility designs to futuristic research types. Many of these problems involve comparison of theory and experiment to demonstrate their mutual relationship. Comprised of 25 chapters, this book begins with a discussion on the aerodynamics of the component parts related to the lift and moment characteristics of an airplane, including wings and associated accessories; bodies such as fuselages, nacelles, and tip tanks; and control surfaces. The reader is then introduced to some mathematical techniques for linear differential equations; steady flight at different speeds; and stick force and control-free stability. Subsequent chapters focus on flaps and high-lift devices; power and compressibility effects; and the manner in which the aircraft responds to the application of control. Aeroelasticity and longitudinal equations of motion are also examined. This monograph is intended for undergraduate and graduate students taking modern engineering courses.

A motion-base simulator was used to compare the flying qualities of three generic single-rotor helicopters during a full-attention-to-flight control task. Terminal-area VOR instrument approaches were flown with and without turbulence. The objective of this NASA/FAA study was to investigate the influence of helicopter static stability in terms of the values of cockpit control gradients as specified in the existing airworthiness criteria, and to examine the effectiveness of several types of stability control augmentation systems in improving the instrument-flight-rules capability of helicopters with reduced static stability. Two levels of static stability in the pitch, roll, and yaw axes were examined for a hingeless-rotor configuration; the variations were stable and neutral static stability in pitch and roll, and two levels of stability in yaw. For the lower level of static stability, four types of stability and control augmentation were also examined for helicopters with three rotor types: hingeless, articulated, and teetering. Pilot rating results indicate the acceptability of neutral static stability longitudinally and laterally and the need for pitch-roll attitude augmentation to achieve a satisfactory system. The lateral-directional stability derivatives for a medium-sized single rotor helicopter have been estimated for three different forward speeds. The analysis technique is based on a least squares quasilinearization method which employs a specially formatted parameter vector so that reliable a priori estimates can be used to assist convergence. An additional unique feature is the procedure adopted to reduce the influence of unknown atmospheric inputs on the parameter estimates by means of a conglomerate analysis of several similar runs. Limited Stability And Control Evaluation Of The S 62a Helicopter written by Kenneth R. Ferrell and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1961 with Helicopters categories.

The S-62A is a conventional single lifting rotor helicopter with a conventional anti-torque tail rotor manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft Division of United Aircraft Corporation. The S-62A is essentially an improved, amphibious, turbine powered model of the H-19 helicopter and uses many of the same dynamic components. In general the flying qualities are good. Sideward and rearward flight capabilities are excellent. Controllability about all axis is acceptable and the helicopter is very easy to fly. The major shortcomings in flying qualities are the high pedal forces and poor dynamic lateral-directional stability during climb. The cockpit arrangement is satisfactory and the cabin is exceptionally large for a helicopter of this weight class. Overall vibration levels are very low for all flight conditions tested. External sound levels are comparable to other current turbine powered helicopters with the sound level on the left (exhaust) side being higher than the right side of the helicopter.

Hu 1 Stability And Control Evaluation written by Juan M. Calderon and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1960 with Helicopters categories.

The HU-1 is a single rotor utility type helicopter manufacttured by Bell Helicopter Corporation and powered by a Lycoming T52-L-1B free turbine engine limited to 770 horsepower at 6400 rpm. The design mission of this helicopter includes transport of personnel and equipment, instrument training, medical evacuation, and general utility operations. The HU-1 helicopter has stability and control characteristics that are suitable for the accomplishment of its design mission. Stability and control deficiencies which exist may be tolerated and do not preclude the service use of the aircraft. The correction of these deficiencies will result in a helicopter with excellent overall flying qualities. The principle deficiencies include: "wallowing" while hovering in ground effect, persistent lateral-directional oscillation in forward flight, and excessive vibration levels at the higher airspeeds. The contractor has studied these three areas; however, there are no known fixes pending. Outstanding characteristics of the aircraft include excellent dynamic longitudinal stability, strong static directional stability, excellent sideward and rearward flight capabilities, good controllability and good cockpit design.
