Per offrire un modello di crescita e di sviluppo radicalmente alternativo a quello che ha dominato il trentennio neoliberista: un nuovo paradigma socio-culturale in cui l’uomo, i suoi diritti e la sua dignità tornino al centro del dibattito pubblico. «Non riesco a declinare i princìpi di uguaglianza e libertà se non parto dal lavoro. Il lavoro inteso, come nell’articolo 1 della nostra Costituzione, in tutte le sue forme, subordinate o autonome, a partire da quello svolto in condizioni di subordinazione sostanziale e di restrizione della partecipazione attiva e creativa, senza disconoscere le asimmetrie di potere tra i diversi soggetti della produzione e le divergenze tra gli interessi in campo. Tra chi vende la sua forza lavoro e chi organizza la produzione rimangono, nonostante tutti i “post” possibili, asimmetrie di potere e divergenze di interesse». Roberto Bertoni, ventiquattro anni, è giornalista, scrittore, poeta, fin da giovanissimo collaboratore di testate locali e nazionali, conduttore di trasmissioni radiofoniche presso l’emittente studentesca Radio Zai.net. Eclettico e interessato a temi diversi – sport, politica, costume, letteratura, analisi storica ed economica – è autore di tre saggi, cinque romanzi e due raccolte di poesie. Andrea Costi, esperto in politiche ambientali e della “green economy”, è progettista nel campo dello sviluppo sostenibile e della formazione, sia professionale che sindacale, e autore di saggi e pubblicazioni varie su tali temi nel contesto delle relazioni industriali e del mercato del lavoro a livello nazionale ed europeo. Stefano Fassina, classe 1966, è stato viceministro dell’Economia e delle Finanze nel Governo Letta. Da dicembre 2009 a maggio 2013 responsabile del Dipartimento Economia e Lavoro del Partito democratico, è stato per cinque anni economista al Fondo monetario internazionale e, prima e dopo, consigliere economico al Ministero dell’Economia con Carlo Azeglio Ciampi e Laura Pennacchi, con Tommaso Padoa Schioppa e Vincenzo Visco. Si è laureato all’Università Bocconi in Discipline economiche e sociali.

Incrociando la riflessione teorica e storica con l’analisi di situazioni precise, esamina in cosa le forme attuali di lavoro autorizzino o, al contrario, impediscano l’autonomia e la potenza d’agire, producano emancipazione o servitù volontaria. Esistono oggi delle alternative possibili, se non addirittura delle utopie concrete, che stravolgono i rapporti di dominio e dipendenza? Su iniziativa del collettivo internazionale e interdisciplinare ArTLib, alcuni tra i migliori specialisti sul tema sono stati invitati a partecipare a questo dibattito sul lavoro e il suo futuro, con lo scopo di ravvivare le speranze di liberazione che questa attività può ancora alimentare nel XXI secolo.

The most passionate advocates of Italy’s unification in the nineteenth century possessed an almost limitless faith in the benefits of civic association. They also shared a common concern: once Italian unification was achieved and various freedoms were established, would ordinary Italians naturally become responsible, progressive citizens – especially after centuries of foreign rule, regional division, and economic decline? Most unification advocates doubted that their fellow citizens could form a modern, progressive civil society on their own, or that a vibrant association life would develop from the ground up. Building a Civil Society is the first book-length English-language study of associational life in nineteenth-century Italy. Drawing on extensive research in published and unpublished documents – including associational records, newspapers, periodicals, government documents, guidebooks, exhibition catalogues, memoirs, and private letters – Steven C. Soper provides a complex account of Italian liberalism during Europe’s age of association. His study also raises important questions about the role that associations play in emerging democracies.

The recent vast upsurge in social science scholarship on job precarity has generally little to say about earlier forms of this phenomenon. Eloisa Betti’s monograph convincingly demonstrates on the example of Italy that even in the post-war phase of Keynesian stability and welfare state, precarious labor was an underlying feature of economic development. She examines how in this short period exceptional politics of labor stability prevailed. The volume then presents the processes whereby labor precarity regained momentum— under the name of flexibility— in the post-Fordist phase from the early 1980s, taking on new forms in the Craxi and Berlusconi eras. Multiple actors are addressed in the analysis. The book gives voice to intellectuals, scholars, politicians and trade unionists as they have framed the concept and debates on precarious work from the 1950s onwards. Views of labor law experts, politicians and public servants are investigated in regard to labor regulations. Positions of the very precarians are explored, ranging from rural women, industrial homeworkers and blue-collar workers to physicians, university researchers and trainees, unveiling the emergence of anti-precarity social movements. The continuous role of women’s associations and feminist groups in opposing labor precarity since the 1950s is prominently exposed.
