Excerpt from The Psychology of Health and Happiness The law of life is progress, never retrogression. The so-called degeneration (the doom of the non-selected) is really a process of growth. That which seems to our human experience infinity is but a momentary incident in the vast related whole Of life. In the great law of selection of the fittest, it is conceivable that the degen crate is potentially more fit than his surviving neighbor, and in the ascent of life that he may outstrip him. Every force, every form of energy works through law. No advance is possible but through conformity to it. The principles of psychology underlie all human growth. The natural world in growth responds to its highest possibilities unswervingly, eternally. The human growth follows the same process. The highest achievement of man, indubitably, is thought power; and this energy is, of all forms, most powerful because it is the culmination. Conformation to this law means for man not only mould ing but making power; not adjustment merely, but crea tive possibility. Aberration from this law is unbalance (disease). Disease, from this standpoint, therefore, has broad scope. It is contemporaneous with life's begin nings. A rational interpretation of those forces which make for this unbalance should lead far toward adjust ment. Excerpt from Preservation of Health, and Prevention of Disease: Including Practical Suggestions on Diet, Mental Development, Exercise, Ventilation, Bathing, Use of Medicines, Management of the Sick, Etc During the entire period of its existence, the human body is governed by laws as unalterable as the Deca logue. But, unlike the moral code, the laws which are engraven on the bones and muscles, and on the tissues and organs of the body, know of no atonement. The transgressor is usually overtaken too late to be saved by repentance. He that has violated the laws of his being by undue exposure to heat or cold, by improper indulgence of the passions or the appetite, or by excess ive mental or bodily labor, must bear the consequences of his wrong-doing in his own person. Every individ ual 'is thus the divinely-appointed guardian of his own health, and is accountable for the fidelity with which he discharges his trust. A knowledge of the conditions on which the blessings of life and health are entrusted to us is, therefore, one of the most important objects that can possibly claim our attention. Excerpt from A Friend in Need: A Household Guide in Health and in Disease That much of the suffering of mankind is but the penalty imposed for violations of organic law, is a truth with which all intelligent students of nature are familiar, and even the careless observer must, in many of his afflictions, recognize the relation between cause and effect. The problem of life is insoluble, and many of the mysterious influences which shape the end of man must ever remain past understanding. With the progress of science, however, many truths have been revealed, and numberless fancies and prejudices, born of'ignorance and superstition, 'have been dissipated. Scientific research and'analogical reasoning have Shown many ancient theories to be untenable, and opened avenues which, when explored, must lead to a clearer understanding of the inner workings of life) The diffusion of knowledge, of late years, has been rapid and widespread; few indeed can now be found 'to Sustain' the once popular theorv that disease is a special dispensation, or the expressron' of an offended Deity. A better understanding of N at'ure's manifestations, and of man's inherent powers and responsibilities, has taught us that to avert epidemics we must depend upon our own efforts and sanitary precautions, rather than upon fasting and prayer. To the human constitution a natural period of existence has been given; man from the begrnning of his being is subject to the ordinary laws of Nature. He is endowed with those qualities essential to the sustenance of self, in the usual experiences of life, and, while'ever subordinate to the 'divine Will, be yet exists independently as it were, under the domain of his own intellect. He is, in a measure, physically as well as mentally, the arbiter of his destiny. As his. Mind expands, so may his body grow in strength, perfecting development and acquiring a higher degreeof vitality, Which makes it more powerful to resist those accidental infirmities to Which all are liable. The physical structure of man may, not improperly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Study in Health-Science It seems hard to give up old superstitions; as Newman says; Oh! That thy creed were sound - for thou dost soothe the soul by thy unwearied round in the Holy Place. As the drug superstition will have no place in the practice of the future. So there will he no need for platitude, nor the reproach of the st of the common type doctor. The pompous pretet 'er, in his attitude towards his patient. Who befuddles he mind 0! The anxious father for his son with what he. Calls a prognosis. If he continues in his present state for auv considerable time. It will undoubtedly go hard with him; but if, on the other hand, he takes a turn for the better, he-will probablv'get well. Credo! Judveus Apclla. Excerpt from The Law of Connecticut in Regard to the Pollution of Waters The law does not lead but rather follows the progress or at least the changes of the human race. Precedents are not established nor statutes enacted to meet a condition until that condition presents itself. N o attempt is made to remedy an evil until the evil is known to exist and its ill effects have been experienced. Not until more than half of the nineteenth century had passed did the legislature of Connecticut begin to enact statutes in regard to the pollution of waters and it was not until about the same time that cases involving this subject began to be brought to our Supreme Court. The subject does not appear to be mentioned in an edition of Swift's Digest published in 1849. The reason for this is evident. It was not until that time that the cities of this state began to construct sewers upon an extensive plan, nor was it until then that the germ theory of diseases was announced and came to be widely accepted moreover, it was not until that time that the soils of the state began to show the need of artificial fertilization and a more scientific treatment then they had heretofore received. Infectious Diseases Of Humans written by Roy M. Anderson and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991 with Medical categories.

This book deals with infectious diseases -- viral, bacterial, protozoan and helminth -- in terms of the dynamics of their interaction with host populations. The book combines mathematical models with extensive use of epidemiological and other data. This analytic framework is highly useful for the evaluation of public health strategies aimed at controlling or eradicating particular infections. Such a framework is increasingly important in light of the widespread concern for primary health care programs aimed at such diseases as measles, malaria, river blindness, sleeping sickness, and schistosomiasis, and the advent of AIDS/HIV and other emerging viruses. Throughout the book, the mathematics is used as a tool for thinking clearly about fundamental and applied problems having to do with infectious diseases. The book is divided into two parts, one dealing with microparasites (viruses, bacteria and protozoans) and the other with macroparasites (helminths and parasitic arthropods). Each part begins with simple models, developed in a biologically intuitive way, and then goes on to develop more complicated and realistic models as tools for public health planning. The book synthesizes previous work in this rapidly growing field (much of which is scattered between the ecological and the medical literature) with a good deal of new material.
