Lawrence as a surfing vacation to Morocco turns into a series of life-changing adventures--stemming from such random events as a knock on the door, the casual flipping through a magazine, a duffle bag knocked off a shoulder, a walk through a Marrakech alley when suddenly being pulled into a shop, and a motorcycle ride behind a truck loaded with olives. His fascinating work of storytelling details his courage to pursue new opportunities. You'll appreciate T.R.'s excitement when he buys ten exquisite hand-woven rugs during his first trip and finds a buyer in the States. T.R. shares the joy of stepping into a business that quickly becomes an adventurous lifestyle he is destined to live. His narrative writing covers his 25-year successful import-export business, with the partnership of his wife, Linda, and the assistance of local merchants, as he gathers the best antiques and things rarer and finer than what unknowledgeable tourists can find. T.R. and Linda embrace the culture and customs of Moroccans, adopting their clothing styles as their own. He takes you into the street markets and alleyways in the old section of the city, as well as the intriguing Djemaa el Fna, the Square of the Dead. Become enthralled with the acrobats, snake charmers, and storytellers that enliven the square each evening across from their hotel. T.R. frequently feels that Marrakech is speaking to him, convincing him he belongs there. Travelers will celebrate each page in T.R.'s journeys within the country and through the realm of art and cultural activities discovered in his hunt for exquisite rug weavings by hand, jewelry, antiques, and clothing in the street markets for export to the United States. In his own prosperity, T.R. naturally helps many merchants thrive as they go out in search of rarities for him. Welcomed and respected by the business community, he creates and fosters relationships lasting decades. Enjoy T.R.'s vivid details and fascinating cultural experiences of a country vastly different from what we know in the West--exotic, ancient, colorful, and rich in sights and sounds.

Two Arabs A Berber And A Jew written by Lawrence Rosen and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with History categories.

"Drawn from Memory" is an important contribution to Moroccan studies, to the field of anthropology, and to academic approaches to biography. Rosen weaves the threads of his narrative together into a tapestry focused on the lives of four men: a raconteur, a teacher, an entrepreneur, and a cloth dealer, a Jew. Ordinary people have intellectual lives, Rosen tells us. They may never have written a book; they may never even have read one. But their lives are rich in ideas, constantly fashioned and revised, elaborated and rearranged. Rosen first encountered the four men he profiles in his book in the course of his academic research, and he then visited and revisited these men, and the towns in which they live, over several decades. He engaged them ina kind of continuous conversation. He spoke to members of their family, their neighbors, and the town people. Out of this wealth of material, he has constructed a narrative that takes the reader not only into four intensely observed individual lives but also, as it were, the history of Morocco s evolution across the span of many decades; he takes the reader not only into the outwardly lived lives of his subjects, but their innermost thoughts, their own perceptions of themselves and the evolving Moroccan world around them. At the same time, he manages to evoke the physical landscape, the towns in which these men live, marvelously well, so that the towns and their inhabitants come alive for the reader. Beautifully illustrated with archival and ethnographic photos, "Drawn from Memory" teaches us that that for Moroccans, and by extension Muslims in general, nothing in everyday social life is hard and fast, and the meaning and outcome of all interactions is the product of negotiation and relatedness."

Marrakech is the heart and lifeblood of Morocco's ancient storytelling tradition. For nearly a thousand years, storytellers have gathered in the Jemaa el Fna, the legendary square of the city, to recount ancient folktales and fables to rapt audiences. But this unique chain of oral tradition that has passed seamlessly from generation to generation is teetering on the brink of extinction. The competing distractions of television, movies and the internet have drawn the crowds away from the storytellers and few have the desire to learn the stories and continue their legacy. Richard Hamilton has witnessed at first hand the death throes of this rich and captivating tradition and, in the labyrinth of the Marrakech medina, has tracked down the last few remaining storytellers, recording stories that are replete with the mysteries and beauty of the Maghreb.

The Golden Warrior written by Lawrence James and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-01-02 with Middle East categories.

During the 1920s--in the aftermath of the Arab revolt against Britain--T. E. Lawrence gained global attention, both for his involvement in the Middle Eastern anti-imperialist movement, and for his vivid and sensational writings about his experiences. Following World War I, his appointment as an advisor to Winston Churchill--nearly simultaneous with the release of an American documentary about the revolt--further charged the T. E. Lawrence mania. Despite the emergence of a whole new set of problems in the Middle East, and fueled by the classic status of the epic movie Lawrence of Arabia, the T. E. Lawrence mystique continues to fascinate. Controversial and provocative, this revised and updated edition of Lawrence James's acclaimed biography penetrates and overturns the mythology that surrounds T. E. Lawrence. With access to previously unavailable documents, James traces the sometimes spurious Lawrence legend back to its truthful roots, peeling back the layers of Lawrence's calculated public persona to reveal the gifted, tortured man behind the shimmering myth. Yet James remains dispassionate and generous in spirit throughout. The Golden Warrior presents readers with a fascinating study of one of the twentieth century's most remarkable figures. Skyhorse Publishing, along with our Arcade, Good Books, Sports Publishing, and Yucca imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs. Our list includes biographies on well-known historical figures like Benjamin Franklin, Nelson Mandela, and Alexander Graham Bell, as well as villains from history, such as Heinrich Himmler, John Wayne Gacy, and O. J. Simpson. We have also published survivor stories of World War II, memoirs about overcoming adversity, first-hand tales of adventure, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

This carefully crafted ebook: "The Collected Works of Lawrence of Arabia (Unabridged)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Thomas Edward Lawrence (1888-1935) was a British archaeologist, military officer, and diplomat. He was renowned for his liaison role during the Sinai and Palestine Campaign, and the Arab Revolt against Ottoman Turkish rule of 1916-18. The breadth and variety of his activities and associations, and his ability to describe them vividly in writing, earned him international fame as Lawrence of Arabia. Throughout his life, Lawrence was a prolific writer. A large portion of his output was epistolary; he often sent several letters a day. Seven Pillars of Wisdom is an account of his war experiences. In 1919 he had been elected to a seven-year research fellowship at Oxford, providing him with support while he worked on the book. In addition to being a memoir of his experiences during the war, certain parts also serve as essays on military strategy, Arabian culture and geography, and other topics. Lawrence re-wrote Seven Pillars of Wisdom three times; once "blind" after he lost the manuscript while changing trains at Reading railway station. The Mint is a memoir of his experiences as an enlisted man in the Royal Air Force (RAF). It concerns the period following the First World War when Lawrence decided to disappear from public view. He enlisted in RAF under an assumed name, becoming 352087 Aircraftman Ross. The book is a closely observed autobiographical account of his experiences. He worked from a notebook that he kept while enlisted, writing of the daily lives of enlisted men and his desire to be a part of something larger than himself: the Royal Air Force. Table of Contents: Seven Pillars of Wisdom The Mint The Evolution of a Revolt Translations: The Odyssey The Forest Giant Letters (1915-1935)

The real story of T. E. Lawrence’s life as told by the author of I, Claudius. “A combination of history, biography, and . . . an amazingly human tale” (Boston Evening Transcript). Immortalized in the film Lawrence of Arabia, the real T. E. Lawrence was a leader, a war strategist, and a scholar, and is here immortalized in an intimate biography written by his close friend, the award-winning British novelist, poet and classicist Robert Graves. As a student at Oxford, T. E. Lawrence was fascinated with Middle Eastern history and culture, and underwent a four-month visit to Syria to study the fortifications built by the crusaders. Later, he returned to the region, this time as an archaeologist working with the British Army’s Intelligence unit in Egypt during World War I. From there, in 1916, he joined Arab rebels fighting against Turkish domination. His brilliance as a desert war tactician earned him the respect of the Turkish fighters and worldwide renown. “Interesting and informative.” —New York Herald Tribune “[Mr. Graves] has done his job admirably and without any too obvious excesses of hero worship.” —New Statesman “[Readers] will consult Mr. Graves for information about this man.” —The New Republic
