“Io ritengo che ciascuno di noi abbia in sé un non credente e un credente, che si parlano dentro, si interrogano a vicenda, si rimandano continuamente interrogazioni pungenti e inquietanti l’uno all'altro. Il non credente che è in me inquieta il credente che è in me e viceversa”. Con queste parole Carlo Maria Martini apriva la Prima Cattedra dei non credenti nel 1987. Iniziava così un lungo cammino di dialogo che Martini volle espressamente per dare la parola a non credenti, offrendo loro la possibilità di rendere ragione delle proprie convinzioni, e favorendo nei credenti un atteggiamento di ascolto disponibile e pensoso. Attraverso l’incontro con personaggi di spicco della cultura e del mondo scientifico, nel corso delle dodici edizioni delle Cattedre, fu possibile esplorare che cosa significa credere e non credere in rapporto alla città, ai sentimenti, all’arte e alla letteratura, al dolore, al cosmo e alla storia. “L’importante – commenta Martini – è che impariate a inquietarvi. Se credenti, a inquietarvi della vostra fede. Se non credenti, a inquietarvi della vostra non credenza. Solo allora le vostre posizioni saranno veramente fondate”. Questo volume, il primo di una serie di diciotto volumi che raccoglierà l’intera opera di Carlo Maria Martini, presenta al pubblico la versione integrale e completa di tutte le dodici Cattedre, svoltesi a Milano dal 1987 al 2002, con molti interventi inediti. L’opera, realizzata dalla Fondazione Carlo Maria Martini in collaborazione con la casa editrice Bompiani, nasce con l’intento di conservare, diffondere e soprattutto mantenere vivi, il patrimonio e l’eredità di uno dei grandi protagonisti dell’ultimo secolo.

In this volume, Karol Piotr Kulpa offers a coherent analysis of the reception of 2 Thess. 2:3-12 by Tyconius in his Liber Regularum and his reconstructed Expositio Apocalypseos . The author proposes and applies his own method for a reception history composed of historical, literary, and theological levels, which is constructive as well as analytical. In this way he writes a history of reception that not only finds its anchor in the past, but also builds bridges to theological questions of the present. In particular, the author identifies that motifs of homo peccati , mysterium facinoris , and discessio drawn from 2 Thess. 2:3 and 2:7 become Tyconius' "world-constructing verses" in his understanding of Scripture, and of the bipartition in the church's reality, in human nature, and in eschatological temporality. As a result, he offers a refreshingly 'ecumenical' reading of Tyconius, refusing to reduce his significance to that of a 'heretical voice' but re-envisaging him as a potentially authoritative theologian and exegete.

Nei ventidue anni di ministero Martini scrisse 23 lettere pastorali, oltre a moltissime lettere di indizione o di accompagnamento a eventi e iniziative realizzate tra il 1980 e il 2002. In questo ottavo volume dell’Opera omnia vengono finalmente raccolti, ordinati cronologicamente, presentati e annotati oltre cinquanta documenti che hanno scandito il cammino della Diocesi durante questo intenso periodo. Un libro prezioso e un documento storico unico, suddiviso in due Tomi, di cui il primo è questo volume cartaceo.
