Le projet de cet ouvrage part d'un constat : les historiens se sont peu attachés à l'étude des textes appuyés sur un support musical et ils les ont trop souvent traités comme des écrits ordinaires. La rareté des travaux dans ces domaines résulte pour une large part du statut mixte d'un genre inadapté aux procédures de l'analyse et du commentaire du texte. A la différence des «catéchismes» et manuels de tout genre dont on retient les formules apprises par cœur, du discours politique ou du sermon dont on retient plus l'esprit que les formules, l'assimilation du texte chanté se fait à la fois par un air et par des paroles. Qu'il s'agisse de la chanson politique ou du chant religieux, c'est la musique qui guide les paroles, qui aide à les mémoriser et contribue à maintenir une atmosphère, des sentiments, des convictions que l'air simplement fredonné suffit à faire revivre. On pressent donc facilement que l'impact du chant ne résulte pas seulement d'une opération intellectuelle, mais qu'il dépend des formes de sociabilité et qu'il structure des représentations et concerne au premier chef l'éducation des sens, de l'émotion et du goût. Tous les mouvements idéologiques ou religieux ont utilisé le support musical pour convaincre, pour rallier, pour souder foules, militants ou croyants. L'essai d'une étude simultanée de l'organisation formelle des textes et des structures musicales fonde l'originalité même de cet ouvrage qui supposait l'intervention conjointe d'historiens, de musicologues et d'ethnomusicologues. Du Moyen Age à Yves Montand, de la Bretagne ancienne à celle du XXe siècle, ces textes illustrent, dans leur nécessaire diversité, les aspects d'une problématique riche de promesses.

C'est du mot chanson et de sa famille lexicale, depuis ses origines en ancien fran ais jusqu' nos jours en fran ais moderne, dont il sera question. La pr sente tude entend cr er un vocabulaire op ratoire utile pour l'avancement des recherches relatives l' tude th orique de l'objet-chanson. Elle conceptualise l'objet-chanson et s mantiser les lex mes de la famille de chanson dans une approche historique des cultures franco-fran aise et qu b coise. Le corpus utilis est form de documents crits (corpus linguistiques) au sein desquels se mat rialise le vocabulaire en contexte. Nous avons aussi consid r la r flexion sur l'usage des signes servant nommer ces ph nom nes (corpus m talinguistique). Environ 500 dictionnaires de langue et th matique et 900 oeuvres litt raires (essais sur la chanson, etc.) constituent le corpus. The seventeenth-century French diplomat François de Callières once wrote that "an ambassador resembles in some way an actor exposed on the stage to the eyes of the public in order to play great roles." The comparison of the diplomat to an actor became commonplace as the practice of diplomacy took hold in early modern Europe. More than an abstract metaphor, it reflected the rich culture of spectacular entertainment that was a backdrop to emissaries' day-to-day lives. Royal courts routinely honored visiting diplomats or celebrated treaty negotiations by staging grandiose performances incorporating dance, music, theater, poetry, and pageantry. These entertainments—allegorical ballets, masquerade balls, chivalric tournaments, operas, and comedies—often addressed pertinent themes such as war, peace, and international unity in their subject matter. In both practice and content, the extravagant exhibitions were fully intertwined with the culture of diplomacy. But exactly what kind of diplomatic work did these spectacles perform? Ellen R. Welch contends that the theatrical and performing arts had a profound influence on the development of modern diplomatic practices in early modern Europe. Using France as a case study, Welch explores the interconnected histories of international relations and the theatrical and performing arts. Her book argues that theater served not merely as a decorative accompaniment to negotiations, but rather underpinned the practices of embodied representation, performance, and spectatorship that constituted the culture of diplomacy in this period. Through its examination of the early modern precursors to today's cultural diplomacy initiatives, her book investigates the various ways in which performance structures international politics still.

« Le travail de l'acteur sur lui-même » est une formule empruntée par Jerzy Grotowski à Constantin Stanislavski. Dans la dernière phase de sa recherche à Pontedera (Italie), Grotowski explore ce qui fut baptisé « l'art comme véhicule » par Peter Brook. Dans la première partie de cette thèse, nous explorons la quête spirituelle dans le travail de l'acteur initiée par Constantin Stanislavski. Nous remontons à la filiation de Jerzy Grotowski avec Stanislavski, et retraçons l'histoire de la naissance du Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards. Dans la deuxième partie, nous explorons le travail de la recherche entreprise par l'Open Program sous la direction de Mario Biagini, un des héritiers de Grotowski qui fut le directeur artistique associé du Workcenter. Dans la troisième partie, nous abordons le processus créatif avec des chants liturgiques explorés par les hommes de l'Open Program, notamment avec deux travaux de recherches pratiques sur des chants musulmans et chrétiens. Dans la dernière partie, nous traversons le cœur du travail de l'acteur et le processus créatif d'un seul-en-scène en arabe littéraire intitulé Le Récit de l'Exil Occidental, d'après le texte du mystique persan Sohravardi. Cette dernière partie est ainsi complétée par un travail pratique en cours, et dans la thèse par des enregistrements audio, redonnant vie quelques fois à des étapes oubliées de ce travail. Nous clôturons cette traversée en approchant « le travail de l'acteur sur lui-même » avec Peter Brook, avec lequel nous avons collaboré à l'issue de l'aventure au Workcenter.

Simple songs or airs, in which a male poetic voice either seduces or excoriates a female object, were an influential vocal genre of the French Baroque era. In this comprehensive and interdisciplinary study, Catherine Gordon-Seifert analyzes the style of airs, which was based on rhetorical devices of lyric poetry, and explores the function and meaning of airs in French society, particularly the salons. She shows how airs deployed in both text and music an encoded language that was in sensuous contrast to polite society's cultivation of chaste love, strict gender roles, and restrained discourse.
