Jim Kanaris provides a comprehensive understanding of esteemed theologian Bernard Lonergan's philosophy of religion and a crucial means of identifying precisely the points of contact between Lonergan's thoughts on God and religion and the issues presently discussed by philosophers of religion. Defining Lonergan's philosophy of religion presents a challenge because he does not use the term as it is generally understood. On interprète généralement la philosophie morale de Kant à partir d'un certain nombre de thèses devenues classiques et qui demeurent souvent ininterrogées. La theologie negative s'attache a designer tout ce que l'on ne peut pas dire sur Dieu. Les perfections attribuees a Dieu (comme l'etre, la bonte, la sagesse, etc.) atteignent-elles celui-ci en verite ou doivent-elles etre depassees? Sont-elles le lieu d'un travail speculatif ou bien d'une union mystique dans l'ineffable? Qu'en est-il du vocabulaire de theologie negative , absent de nombre d'auteurs? La theologie negative fait l'objet de recherches renouvelees. Le platonisme et sa reception, les auteurs medievaux et, surtout, la lecture heideggerienne de l'histoire de la metaphysique y concourent. Y a-t-il une theologie negative chez saint Thomas et, si oui, laquelle? De Dieu, nous ne savons pas ce qu'il est mais seulement ce qu'il n'est pas : cette formule thomasienne devenue emblematique vient de Plotin. Thomas est-il original? Pour le savoir, il faut le situer parmi ses contemporains. De plus, le risque est de ne considerer que quelques textes celebres, au lieu de prendre la mesure de leur insertion dans les oeuvres et de chaque oeuvre dans l'oeuvre. Une etude d'ensemble restait a faire. Dieu, dit Thomas, nous est completement inconnu . Pourtant, sa theologie negative semble etre plutot une voie negative, l'ensemble des modalites negatives venant corriger et confirmer la primaute de la predication positive des perfections divines.
