Le chien guerrier a toujours existé. La seconde guerre mondiale fut l'occasion pour de nombreux pays de démontrer ou de confirmer l'intérêt de son utilisation dans les armées. Le chien militaire y était un précieux allié qui pouvait remplir de nombreuses fonctions. Certains pays utilisèrent le chien de guerre de la même façon que pour la première guerre mondiale. Pour d'autres, la seconde guerre mondiale fut l'occasion de tester l'emploi du chien militaire. Ainsi, les Etats-Unis employèrent des unités cynotechniques dans toutes leurs troupes pour la première fois au cours de cette guerre avec un bilan plutôt positif. Des unités cynotechniques furent envoyées au combat sur de nombreux fronts au cours du conflit de 1939-1945. Il est clair que les capacités du chien ne pouvaient être correctement exploitées que si le recrutement et le dressage des animaux étaient bien menés. Il fallait pour cela que le service de chiens de guerre soit convenablement organisé; pour être fonctionnel, il ne devait pas être mis en place dans l'urgence, comme ce fut le cas pour la France qui attendit la Libération pour mettre sur pied des unités cynotechniques efficaces qui sont encore employées de nos jours.

Essays in English focus not only on familiar writers (Dionne Brand, Edwidge Danticat, Wilson Harris, Jamaica Kincaid, Caryl Phillips, Derek Walcott) but also on less widely studied voices (Robert Antoni, Albert Helman). Other contributions deal with such 'fighting areas' as Afro-Brazilian music, film, and Mutabaruka's militant poetry. The whole testifies to a surprisingly coherent imaginary, one that goes beyond the 'balkanization' of the Caribbean archipelago.
