La storia costruttiva e le questioni di restauro relative alla chiesa dei SS. Sebastiano e Rocco sono in un certo senso esemplari della problematicità che contraddistingue in genere le architetture antiche: fabbrica ‘minore’, ma ugualmente densa di valori, palinsesto costruttivo e decorativo e contemporaneamente preziosa testimonianza dell’eco che la cultura barocca determinò nella provincia romana del tardo Seicento, edificio ecclesiastico rurale e poi cerniera dell’espansione urbana dell’abitato di San Vito Romano, impianto centrico successivamente ‘longitudinalizzato’. La piccola chiesa ha disvelato la sua complessità solo tramite un’attenta e prolungata ricerca, che ha trovato supporto e verifica nel corso del cantiere. Quest’ultimo è nato, come spesso accade, da urgenti necessità conservative (derivanti dall’avanzato stato di dissesto in copertura e sulle parti alte delle murature, nonché dal profondo degrado del rivestimento in facciata) ed è poi proseguito in lotti di lavori successivi, portando a compimento una progettazione intesa come atto di sensibilità e cultura, prima che come mero esercizio tecnico. Il volume raccoglie la documentazione della ricerca, del progetto e dei lavori svolti, illustrandone il percorso, le ragioni e i risultati. DONATELLA FIORANI è professore associato in Restauro Architettonico nell’Università dell’Aquila e collabora con la Scuola di Specializzazione in Restauro dei Monumenti dell’Università di Roma “La Sapienza”; è membro di redazione di diverse riviste di Storia dell’Architettura e di Restauro. Ha redatto studi nel campo della storia dell’architettura, delle tecniche costruttive e del restauro, pubblicando, fra l’altro, Tecniche costruttive murarie medievali. Il Lazio meridionale, Roma, «L’Erma» di Bretschneider, 1996; Il colore dell’edilizia storica, Atti del convegno (L’Aquila, 13-14 novembre 2000), Roma, Gangemi Editore, 2000; Restauro architettonico e strumento informatico. Guida agli elaborati grafici, Napoli, Liguori 20043. Ha progettato, diretto e seguito come consulente scientifico i restauri di diversi edifici storici nel centro Italia.
