«La distinzione tra la destra e la sinistra, per la quale l’ideale dell’eguaglianza è sempre stato la stella polare, è nettissima. Basta spostare lo sguardo alla questione sociale internazionale, per rendersi conto che la sinistra non solo non ha compiuto il proprio cammino ma lo ha appena cominciato». Norberto Bobbio Parole chiave del nostro linguaggio pubblico, «destra» e «sinistra» sperimentano, oggi più che mai, una straordinaria capacità nel connotare il campo della politica. Persino coloro che si mostrano scettici circa l’efficacia della distinzione, o la considerano insoddisfacente, tuttavia non sanno farne a meno e finiscono col riproporla mentre la negano. A distanza di trent’anni dalla sua prima edizione, questo «aureo libretto» – come fu subito autorevolmente definito – assume sempre più la statura di uno di quei rari classici del pensiero politico che possono essere ritenuti fondativi. Davvero Bobbio aveva visto lungo. Davvero la sua saggezza era riuscita ad arrivare alla radice della distinzione, il cui nodo di fondo sta nel diverso atteggiamento che le due parti mostrano nei confronti dell’idea di eguaglianza. Naturalmente eguaglianza e diseguaglianza sono concetti relativi: né la sinistra pensa che gli uomini siano in tutto eguali, né la destra pensa che essi siano in tutto diseguali. Ma coloro che si proclamano di sinistra danno maggiore importanza, nella loro condotta morale e nella loro iniziativa politica, a ciò che rende gli uomini eguali, o ai modi di ridurre le diseguaglianze; mentre coloro che si proclamano di destra sono convinti che le diseguaglianze siano ineliminabili e che non se ne debba neanche auspicare la soppressione. Nel dispiegare i suoi argomenti, Bobbio riesce a rendere conto, secondo il classico procedimento della sua argomentazione, delle «ragioni» di entrambi i campi: «Guardando le cose con un certo distacco, non mi domando chi ha ragione e chi ha torto. Anche se non faccio mistero, alla fine, di quale sia la mia parte». Questa edizione del trentennale si avvale di una nuova prefazione di Nadia Urbinati, che di Bobbio fu allieva, e che percorre qui tutte le tappe, le discussioni, i consensi e le critiche, che hanno fatto di Destra e sinistra un libro di riferimento, e che ne fanno oggi più che mai «una stella polare» per orientarsi nel nostro difficile e problematico presente. Il libro ripropone anche l’introduzione di Massimo L. Salvadori alla «edizione del ventennale» (2014) e una nota introduttiva di Carmine Donzelli alla «edizione del decennale» (2004).

The Italian Far Right from 1945 to the Russia–Ukraine Conflict provides a comprehensive account of the postwar parliamentary and extra parliamentary far right in Italy. This book explores the ideology, movements and activism of the extreme right and neo- fascists. The recent victory in the Italian parliamentary elections of the ‘post-fascist’ party Fratelli d’Italia and its leader Giorgia Meloni highlights the importance of such research. The book examines why some of these movements participated with CIA- backing in the ‘Strategy of Tension’ in the years of the Cold War where terrorist actions aimed to keep Italy in NATO and prevent the Communist Party from coming to power, while other extreme- right groups vehemently opposed this and what they considered the dangerous ‘Americanization’ of the country. It debunks the myth that there was a unified postwar fascist movement in Italy, but instead excavates the complex battles within the extreme right as well as with their opponents from the left, and the authorities. This study is necessary to clarify the history and ideological dynamics of a political area still too often shrouded in mystery and whose geopolitical role is still poorly understood and generally underestimated. The analysis is contextualized in the present day by looking at the different perspectives of the Italian far right on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The book will be of interest to researchers of political history, the Cold War and Italian history and politics.
