This work is the critical edition of the catalog of Holy Roman Emperor Leopold’s II mineralogical collection. The volume, unpublished and preserved at the Historical Archives of the University of Firenze Museum System, dates to 1765 and describes 242 mineralogical specimens coming primarily from the current Slovak-Hungarian mining district. This edition gives the transcription of the German manuscript and its translation into English together with an organized system of notation to illustrate the complex history of the text, the characterization of the mineralogical species, and the geographical location of the mineral extraction sites. This work represents to date the only published catalog of a mineralogical collection belonging to a member of the Habsburg-Lorraine family.

This volume is intended to be the first in a series that will focus on the origin of script and the boundaries of non-scribal communication media in proto-literate and literate societies of the ancient Aegean. Over the last 30 years, the domain of scribes and bureaucrats has become much better known. Our goal now is to reach below the élite and scribal levels to interface with non-scribal operations conducted by people of the ‘middling’ sort. Who made these marks and to what purpose? Did they serve private or (semi-) official roles in Bronze Age Aegean society? The comparative study of such practices in the contemporary East (Cyprus, Anatolia, the Levant, and Egypt) can shed light on sub-elite activities in the Aegean and also provide evidence for cultural and economic exchange networks.

MUSINT is an interactive museological network devoted to the Tuscan archaeological collections which enables the creation of an innovative display itinerary through the collections of Aegean and Cypriot antiquities, so that exhibits originating from different museum institutions can be appreciated. This has led to the creation of a "museum of museums" which responds to the need to offer a display system that can be "visited" by a broad and variegated public. The arrangement of the book itself reflects the true nature of the MUSINT project and its character as a research worksite, enhanced by past experience, and a bridge for the appreciation of new perspectives within a scientific, technological and cultural universe that is open and in continual movement.

Il volume presenta il progetto di recupero, catalogazione e valorizzazione della collezione donata dall’Imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero Giuseppe II (1741-1790) al Gabinetto Mineralogico del Collegio Nazareno di Roma nel 1785. Quest’ultima rappresenta, ad oggi, l’unica collezione di ambito geo-mineralogico ascrivibile con certezza a Giuseppe II. Le schede dei campioni, redatte in base alle normative nazionali ICCD per la catalogazione dei beni mineralogici (BNM) e petrologici (BNPE), sono liberamente accessibili sul Catalogo Generale dei Beni Culturali. La collezione è visitabile, nel suo nuovo allestimento permanente, presso l’Istituto San Giuseppe Calasanzio di Roma. Questa pubblicazione è stata realizzata nell’ambito del progetto PANN20_00605 “Dono imperiale. Nel 1910 le scuole rurali private della Montesca e di Rovigliano, fondate nelle tenute umbre dei Baroni Franchetti, partecipano all’Esposizione Universale e Internazionale di Bruxelles dove si raccontano per la prima volta. L’iniziativa è frutto della lungimiranza di Alice Hallgarten che, filantropa e visionaria, mira a suscitare interesse internazionale verso un innovativo progetto pedagogico volto a contrastare l’analfabetismo e la miseria che segna la vita delle famiglie dei mezzadri locali. Nella capitale belga, i quaderni e i disegni di questi ‘figli delle campagne’, che il primo giorno di lezione fanno fatica persino a «dire il loro nome», meriteranno una medaglia d’oro e un diplôme d’honneur, riscontri ufficiali dell’impegno educativo sostenuto dalle due scuole. La mostra “Alice a Bruxelles” ricostruisce lo stand e il profilo che gli istituti presentarono all’Esposizione Universale. Riemergono così le vicende di quel primo febbrile decennio del secolo che si era avviato con l’inaugurazione delle scuole e si concludeva ora con l’apertura di una Casa dei bambini, ulteriore esito delle intense e fruttuose relazioni di mecenatismo che legarono Alice Hallgarten a Maria Montessori. Alice Hallgarten Franchetti (New York, 1874 – Leysin, 1911) porta una tradizione filantropica e un sapere cosmopolita nelle campagne umbre, dove opera secondo le modalità del femminismo pratico. Inaugura il secolo con la fondazione della scuola della Montesca, seguita poi da quella di Rovigliano. Le sue iniziative e la collaborazione con Maria Montessori avranno un effetto degno di nota sia sul piano nazionale che su quello internazionale.

The Natural History Museum of the University of Florence, founded in 1775 by Grand-Duke Pietro Leopold, is the oldest scientific museum in Europe. With this second volume on the Botanical Collection, Florence University Press continues its series dedicated to the six Sections of the Museum. The first part of the volume recounts the birth of botanical sciences in Florence and the history of the museum collections from sixteenth century to today. Then follows the second part which describes the historical and modern Herbaria, for each of which the main events that went to their formation, the importance of the plants they contain and biographical information on those who built the collections are described. The third section expounds the other collections in the Botanical Section of the Museum, among which of particular interest are the wax models of plants and fruits, manufactured by the old Grand-ducal Ceroplastics Laboratory, the wood collection, plaster of Paris mushrooms and the eighteenth century still life paintings of fruits and vegetables by Bartolomeo Bimbi. Finally, the last part illustrates the importance that herbaria play today in modern scientific research, drawing attention to the fact that they are an archive that holds taxonomical, chorological and ecological information in function of the plants they contain, as well as historical-biographical information on the scholars who, through their efforts, built up the collections.

Il volume riproduce il percorso documentario della mostra Firenze in guerra 1940-1944 promossa dall’Istituto Storico della Resistenza in Toscana in occasione del 70° anniversario della Resistenza e della Liberazione. I contributi introduttivi illustrano il work in progress che ha accompagnato il progetto espositivo e intendono guidare il lettore attraverso una serie di questioni storiografiche al centro della mostra: la centralità della fase 1940-1943, finora rimasta sullo sfondo, le trasformazioni economiche, i nodi del consenso e del controllo sociale, i caratteri dell’occupazione tedesca, il ruolo della Chiesa e la complessa trama della Resistenza fiorentina. Obiettivo della ricerca è stato quello di indagare da vicino l’impatto della guerra sulla popolazione di una grande area urbana, provando a evidenziarne specificità e connessioni con la cornice nazionale.
