The Communist Party appeared a hundred years ago on the French political and social scene. According to opinions and moments, it has been the party of Moscow, of those shot, of the working class, of the union of the left, the party of the foreigner or that of the nation. It has been underground, in government, in town halls, in factories or in the streets. Some considered it too revolutionary, others not enough. More than others, it aroused passions, positive or negative. It attracted many and repelled just as many. After the fall of the USSR, it decided to remain a communist party, while many others gave it up. But it no longer has the place it once had, in reality as in the imagination. This book does not intend to judge, but to provide keys to understanding. It is based on a considerable number of archives that are now available and is an ordered and distanced look at an object that is not lacking in complexity and no doubt even in mystery. This book has been translated from French to English thanks to a financial help from the Gabriel Péri Foundation and the LIR3S UMR Cnrs 7366 of Dijon.

L'Idéologie allemande est une oeuvre posthume de Karl Marx et Friedrich Engels, qu'ils rédigèrent en collaboration entre le printemps 1845 et la fin 18461, et publiée pour la première fois en 1932. Il s'agit d'une critique par Marx des jeunes hégéliens, en particulier de Max Stirner, et d'un exposé du matérialisme historique. Si l'essentiel de L'Idéologie allemande consiste en une contestation par Marx de la plupart des affirmations de L'Unique et sa propriété de Stirner, c'est en partie en critiquant ce dernier que Marx élabore sa conception matérialiste de l'histoire. Aussi certains spécialistes de Marx jugent-ils cette oeuvre de grande valeur, y trouvant l'exposition de la théorie de l'histoire selon Marx la plus longue et détaillée. L'idéologie allemande, "Conception matérialiste et critique du monde", de 1845-1846, fait partie des premiers textes communs des deux fondateurs du marxisme et des oeuvres fondatrices du matérialisme dialectique. C'est l'ouvrage, dont seul le chapitre sur la critique de l'ouvrage de Grun fut publié du vivant de Karl MARX, de référence sur la conception de l'idéologie de la philosophie marxiste. Karl MARX et Friedrich ENGELS ont écrit là un ouvrage à la fois théorique et polémique (et satirique, contre le "vrai socialisme"), en plusieurs fois, entre leurs activités directement politiques à l'intérieur du mouvement révolutionnaire.

Le volume 3 de La Totalité analyse les différentes façons dont la notion de totalité a été conçue et est présente dans les philosophies, depuis les présocratiques jusqu'à nos jours. Après avoir traité de la question du système (la philosophie comme tout), il détermine quatre positions théoriques possibles vis-à-vis de la totalité : la totalité actuelle (des présocratiques à Hegel, en passant par Spinoza), la totalité impossible (Pascal et Kierkegaard), la totalité refusée (Auguste Comte, la philosophie analytique, et les philosophies " de la différence ") et enfin la totalité potentielle, qui met la totalité aux prises avec l'absolu (Platon, Descartes, Kant) ou bien avec l'Histoire (Marx, Sartre). Ainsi l'ensemble de la philosophie se trouve-t-il reparcouru à travers une notion dont la plupart des pensées modernes avaient fini par nous faire oublier le sens central. La conclusion de ce volume introduit à la trilogie de La Totalité réalisée (les volumes 4, 5 et 6 de La Totalité) dont il représente comme la conscience d'ensemble.
