Dal momento che alcuni insegnanti ancora adottano gli approcci grammaticali o linguistici per insegnare una lingua seconda, ho voluto dedicare il mio lavoro di tesi a mettere in evidenza il fatto che la comunicazione è una operazione assai complessa che non si esaurisce in uno scambio di parole o frasi grammaticalmente giuste. Tale operazione si realizza, infatti, in contesti socioculturali in cui gli interlocutori interagiscono intrecciando frasi, gesti, atteggiamenti, nell’interazione gli uni con gli altri.Nel primo capitolo di questo lavoro presento il dibattito tra il concetto di competenze linguistica di Chomsky e il concetto di competenza comunicativa di Dell Hymes, sottolineando come quest’ultima rappresenti l’uso effettivo della lingua nella dimensione socioculturale. Nel secondo capitolo verranno descritte le abilità linguistiche che traducono la competenza comunicativa nel ‘‘saper fare la lingua’’. Questo capitolo, che costituisce la parte centrale di questo lavoro, è dedicato anche alla descrizione di alcune tecniche che l’insegnante può utilizzare per l’insegnamento di abilità linguistiche e comunicative. Per ognuna delle abilità che si intendono sviluppare nella L2 attraverso l’approccio comunicativo si è scelto di illustrare una tecnica specifica.

Nella società della conoscenza e del lifelong learning la capacità di leggere e comprendere testi scritti di diverso tipo viene considerata una competenza chiave di natura trasversale, essenziale per partecipare attivamente alla vita sociale, culturale e produttiva. In tale scenario, la scuola è chiamata a porre una particolare attenzione allo sviluppo delle abilità di comprensione dei testi, cui si lega la necessità di disporre di strumenti che consentano di accertare i livelli di padronanza raggiunti dagli studenti. Il presente volume propone una prova standardizzata per misurare e valutare la comprensione dei testi in uscita dalla classe seconda o in entrata nella classe terza della scuola secondaria di I grado, utile per effettuare un bilancio delle abilità degli studenti nei momenti indicati anche al fine di attuare confronti di natura trasversale o longitudinale con i risultati di altre prove, tra cui quelle pubblicate in questa stessa collana. Il vantaggio di disporre di uno strumento rigorosamente pianificato e tarato su un ampio campione di studenti consiste non solo nella possibilità di ottenere misure attendibili e valide delle abilità in oggetto, definite chiaramente in termini operativi e rapportate a un quadro di riferimento teorico esplicito e articolato, ma anche nella possibilità di analizzare i risultati rapportandoli all’andamento del campione coinvolto nella validazione della prova. Oltre a offrire parametri di riferimento per interpretare e valutare i punteggi grezzi, il volume fornisce alcuni suggerimenti e spunti per migliorare i processi di insegnamento e apprendimento tramite la riflessione sugli obiettivi previsti dal curricolo e l’analisi delle difficoltà degli studenti facendo emergere i processi di pensiero e le forme di ragionamento sottostanti alle loro risposte. This book presents a standardized achievement test that can be used to measure reading comprehension skills in middle school. The first chapter describes the steps of test planning and construction, including the definition of the theoretical framework, the identification of specific skills measured, the choice of the types of texts and items. These steps, in which the writing of test items is preceded by a clear and rigorous definition of the assumptions, the objectives and the overall structure of the instrument, are important to ensure the validity of the test and appropriate sampling and coverage of the items. The second chapter presents the process of validation of the test and its main metrological characteristics, while the third provides detailed instructions for the administration, scoring and data treatment in order to ensure reliability by having a standard procedure. The fourth chapter offers useful indications to interpret and use the results of the test, providing norms derived from the distribution observed in the large sample of students involved in the validation of the instrument that can be used as references for the interpretation and evaluation of the scores. It also offers some suggestions for formative use of results aimed at improving teaching and learning processes and students skills. The final appendix contains both detailed information on test items (skills measured, item difficulty and item discriminability) both the reading comprehension achievement test along with answer sheets and answer keys.
