Entre los "placeres" griegos y la "sexualidad" moderna (que se analizan en los tres primeros libros de la serie), irrumpe la "carne" de los cristianos, es decir, el cuerpo atravesado por un deseo que la voluntad nunca puede controlar del todo. Cómo vigilar ese deseo, cómo hacer de cada individuo un sujeto que se gobierna, se problematiza y se interpreta a sí mismo es la obsesión que surgió con el cristianismo y que todavía nos asedia. ¿Qué viene a mostrarnos este libro? La historia de cómo deseamos y cómo hablamos de nuestros deseos, de cómo llegamos a ser lo que somos. El modo en que hoy vivimos el vínculo sexual y su inscripción en una institución –el matrimonio, el régimen patriarcal– se configuraron en los primeros siglos del cristianismo. En un recorrido que va de Clemente de Alejandría a San Agustín, Foucault describe las pautas que regulan el comportamiento sexual y que, al señalar el camino recto y el que conduce a la caída, guían y dan forma a la subjetividad. Así, se valoran la virginidad, la continencia, la monogamia, la fidelidad, el sexo en función de la procreación. Y se condenan las relaciones homosexuales, el adulterio, la prostitución y los placeres del cuerpo. Pero lo que de verdad marca la experiencia cristiana y configura parte de la nuestra no es la moral de lo permitido y lo prohibido. Es lo que está cifrado en la frase misma "confesiones de la carne": en Occidente –a través de la penitencia, la confesión y la dirección de conciencia–, hombres y mujeres fueron destinados a escrutarse a sí mismos y volcar su deseo en palabras, para decirse y decir a otros su verdad más íntima. Se convirtieron así, en virtud de un poder pastoral que luego se diseminó por toda la sociedad moderna, en sujetos de deseo y al mismo tiempo en animales de confesión. En este libro decisivo, Foucault hace lo que parecería imposible: una historia del deseo, de esa parte de nuestra experiencia que consideramos evidente y natural aunque esté muy lejos de ser así. Las confesiones de la carne, la pieza que faltaba, es uno de los grandes capítulos de la historia ético-política de nosotros mismos y de nuestra actualidad.
