What can a focus on “food projects” in Europe tell us about contemporary social processes and cultural debates? Valeria Siniscalchi and Krista Harper show how food becomes a marker of identity and resistance to social exclusion, and how food values become tools for transforming power dynamics at the local level and beyond. Through the comparison of food-centered movements across Europe, the book explains how these forms of mobilization express ideologies as well as economic and political objectives. Le Nazioni Unite hanno dichiarato il 2026 “Anno Internazionale dei Pascoli e Pastori”. A dicembre 2019, l’UNESCO ha dichiarato la “civiltà della transumanza”, con il suo spostamento stagionale del bestiame lungo le rotte migratorie nel Mediterraneo e nelle Alpi, “Patrimonio culturale immateriale dell’umanità”, su proposta di Italia, Austria e Grecia. Siamo oggi davanti a uno scenario istituzionale che cerca di riprestare attenzione alla funzione regolatrice che i sistemi agropastorali hanno all’interno dei territori rurali e montani, in riflesso dell’importanza che questi possono avere nella creazione di un ambiente sostenibile. L’articolarsi di forme di pastoralismo nell’ambito mediterraneo/circummediterraneo può essere letto in modo comparato confrontando tipi simili di istituzioni e processi in una varietà di contesti politici, economici, burocratici e religiosi. Il caso Sardegna si colloca in quei contesti nei quali le pratiche di allevamento estensivo brado e poi semi-brado, soprattutto ovino, sono state capaci di incidere in maniera cruciale nella regolazione delle strutture sociali ed economiche delle società locali. Sono state inoltre centro dell’identità culturale e contributo attivo nella manutenzione e cura dei paesaggi, con la transumanza prima, e con l’insediamento aziendale poi. Il volume si inserisce all’interno delle attività del progetto Interreg Marittimo IT FR Maritime (2014-2020) “CAMBIO-VIA” e si sviluppa sulla base di una rinnovato interesse scientifico internazionale e multidisciplinare al tema del pastoralismo e alla riconcettualizzazione della sua centralità all’interno degli studi agrari e rurali. In una struttura antologica, si tiene conto del dibattito teorico e della relativa ricerca empirica offerti da una serie di contributi recenti focalizzati sulla definizione dei meccanismi di mutamento e evoluzione dei sistemi pastorali nel contesto sardo, dal modello tradizionale transumante al modello agro-pastorale multifunzionale attuale, in un adattamento continuo a incertezze multiple. Emerge il costante sapersi muovere flessibilmente tra istituzioni e mercati e un’intrinseca cultura di impresa del mondo pastorale. Un mondo essenziale soprattutto in tempi di crisi complesse, climatiche, economiche, perché si mostra in grado di garantire produzioni in ambienti marginali, abbandonati dalle moderne agricolture. Siamo in presenza di una soluzione antica, adatta al presente e proiettata nel futuro, simbolo di vero e proprio vantaggio competitivo economico e naturale.
