Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, dit Le Corbusier [1887-1965), fut sans conteste l'un des architectes les plus inventifs et les plus influents du XXe siècle. Son oeuvre bâtie et projetée, pour l'essentiel menée en association avec son cousin Pierre Jeanneret, concerne tous les programmes qui ont marqué le XXe siècle, notamment l'habitat individuel et collectif, l'urbanisme, les bâtiments publics, culturels, sacrés ou industriels. Auteur d'oeuvres majeures, telles la villa Savoye à Poissy, la Cité radieuse à Marseille, la chapelle de Ronchamp ou la ville de Chandigarh en Inde, Le Corbusier fut pourtant longtemps combattu ; il aura finalement les honneurs de funérailles dans la cour Carrée du Louvre, assorties d'un célèbre discours d'André Malraux. This book considers the post-68 French city as a prism through which to understand the contemporary world and France's specificity within it. The reader is invited to join in a series of exploratory strolls through texts, buildings, and neighborhoods, and thereby share in a process of discovery. Zeroing in on international architectural debates, a range of key Parisian exhibitions, and major urban design decisions in Paris, Montpellier, and Lille, Yaari unravels an often-acerbic French critique of both modern and postmodern positions on culture, technology, and the city.
