The author groups the manuscripts according to stylistic and iconographic criteria, examining images for the role of illustration as well as strategies for literary borrowings. De meme, il sen différencie par le fait quil est fréquemment illustré plus de la moitié des copies, tant dans la version française, que dans sa traduction italienne. L'étude comparative des programmes iconographiques révèle les différents centres dintérêt des commanditaires selon leur origine sociale, linguistique et culturelle. Brigitte Roux étudie lensemble de ces exemplaires enluminés et, sur la base de critères iconographiques et stylistiques, regroupe les différentes copies, dont elle livre les notices dans le catalogue des manuscrits illustrés. L'examen de la totalité de la tradition illustrée du Livre du Trésor a permis le repérage diconographies constantes, en tete desquelles figure le portrait dauteur, ainsi que dun certain nombre de créations singulières, comme la table des matières enluminée ou limage du trésor. Les stratégies demprunt, de citation littérale, de détournement ou dinvention à loeuvre dans cette encyclopédie sont mises au jour, tout comme se découvre la dynamique propre au langage figuratif médiéval.

Le Livre des trois âges est un manuscrit énigmatique destiné au roi Louis XI. L'ouvrage traite d'éducation, de chasse, de bon gouvernement, de foi catholique, d'art de la guerre, le tout en 621 vers et douze miniatures. L'auteur, caché derrière un anagramme, est le Rouennais Pierre Choinet. " Medecin et astrologien " de Louis XI, il écrit ce poème moral et politique pour le roi en 1482 ou 1483. Quant aux douze magnifiques miniatures, elles ont été peintes par le Maître de l'échevinage de Rouen, artiste bien connu qui a travaillé pour les conseillers de la ville dans la seconde moitié du xve siècle. Objet d'art exceptionnel, le Livre des trois âges n'avait jamais jusqu'à ce jour été ni reproduit, ni édité, car le texte était demeuré incompris. Ce précieux manuscrit est comme un " meuble à secret " dont la belle apparence camoufle des tiroirs dissimulés. Le lecteur est invité à découvrir la clé de cette oeuvre d'art qui contribue à éclairer les dernières années du règne de Louis XI. Le présent volume comporte une étude très complète du manuscrit et du texte, le fac-similé, sa transcription et sa traduction, un dossier iconographique et un glossaire.

A new generation of historians today is borrowing from cultural anthropology, post-modern critical theory, and gender studies to understand the social meanings of medieval religious movements, practices, figures, and cults. In this volume Sharon Farmer and Barbara H. Rosenwein bring together essays—all hitherto unpublished—that combine some of the best of these new approaches with rigorous research and traditional scholarship. Some of these essays re-envision the professionals of religion: the monks and nuns who carried out crucial social functions as mediators between living and dead, repositories for social memory, and loci of vicarious piety. In their religious life these people embodied an image of the society that produced them. Other contributions focus on social categories, usually expressed as dichotomies: male/female, insider/outsider, saint/outcast.
