Che cos’è un oggetto? La risposta consueta, quella del senso comune (anche quella di molta filosofia che pretende d’essere realista), è che un oggetto è qualcosa che “sta là fuori”, indipendentemente dal modo in cui lo conosciamo e – eventualmente – lo nominiamo. In questo libro, un classico della filosofia della scienza (uscito in prima edizione nel 1986), Giuliano Toraldo di Francia, a partire da una magistrale analisi dell’ontologia delle sfuggenti entità subatomiche, propone un modo meno semplicistico di rispondere a questa domanda fondamentale: è il caso di parlare, più che di oggetti, della procedura tecnico-scientifica della “oggettuazione”, attraverso la quale si arriva a individuare in qualcosa un determinato oggetto. In questo processo occupa un ruolo fondamentale il linguaggio. Ci interessano i fatti, non le parole, tutti ripetono; ma come si individua un “fatto” se non ne determiniamo la natura attraverso una serie di azioni, pratiche e linguistiche, che lo individuano, appunto, come un fatto? In questo modo il caso delle entità subatomiche non è più un caso eccezionale; al contrario, diventa il modello per intendere tutti gli oggetti, anche quelli dell’esperienza comune. Il libro è impreziosito da una prefazione di Maria Luisa Dalla Chiara, logica, filosofa della scienza, studiosa della logica quantistica, che ha a lungo collaborato con Giuliano Toraldo Di Francia.

Le immagini, che amo definire la variazione dell'uguale che avanza ma non e mai dissimile dalla diversità di messaggio e nominazione stilistica, diventano qualcosa di diverso, di autenticamente curioso, qualcosa che pone lo spettatore di fronte al quesito intimistico di avanzamento dello sguardo o ritrosia del senso dell'immagine proposta. Un ambiguità voluta che sfocia in alcune immagini proposte, che fungono da collante, da "intermezzo" tra una successione e l'altra, che rappresentano la voglia, il desiderio di cambiare, di essere altro, di allontanarsi dalla solita routine che tutto avvolge e governa in un'infinita e rumorosa confusione: una routine piena di doppiezze e di viltà, di ciarle e di pleonastiche vanità, come egli stesso sottolinea. Una scelta obbligata, per rimarcare l'omologazione in atto, in ogni campo, dove tutto diventa normale, riproducibile; dove tutto diviene tranquillamente sostituibile, a scapito dell'unicità.

Can quantum particles be regarded as individuals, just like books, tables and people? According to the 'received' view - articulated by several physicists in the immediate aftermath of the quantum revolution - quantum physics itself tells us they cannot: quantum particles, unlike their classical counterparts, must be regarded as 'non-individuals' in some sense. However, recent work has indicated that this is not the whole story and that the theory is also consistent with the position that such particles can be taken to be individuals, albeit at a metaphysical price. Drawing on philosophical accounts of identity and individuality, as well as the histories of both classical and quantum physics, the authors explore these two alternative metaphysical packages. In particular, they argue that if quantum particles are regarded as individuals, then Leibniz's famous Principle of the Identity of Indiscernibles is in fact violated. Recent discussions of this conclusion are analysed in detail and, again, the costs involved in saving the Principle are carefully considered. Taking the alternative package, the authors deploy recent work in non-standard logic and set theory to indicate how we can make sense of the idea that objects can be non-individuals. The concluding chapter suggests how these results might then be extended to quantum field theory. Identity in Physics brings together a range of work in this area and further develops the authors' own contributions to the debate. Uniquely, as the title indicates, it situates this work in the appropriate formal, historical, and philosophical contexts.

This book addresses the logical aspects of the foundations of scientific theories.
