Cet essai a pour but de sonder les motivations profondes de la fascination pour le désert. Paysage grandiose s'il en est, ses ergs et ses regs ne cessent de hanter l'imaginaire, de jeter les lecteurs à l'affût des pages qui l'évoquent, avec splendeur le plus souvent, dans des récits où dominent les vents, le minéral, la sécheresse, le dépouillement. A force de traverser ces pages dans lesquelles le sable envahit tout, y compris l'espace de l'écriture, certaines certitudes finissent par s'éroder, certains réflexes tendent à s'effriter, pour faire place à de nouvelles interrogations concernant l'émergence du paysage désertique dans la littérature, les figures prédominantes du nomade, de l'anachorète et du vide, qui engagent une réflexion sur le mouvement, la transfiguration, l'altérité des frontières. Des récits de voyage, des nouvelles et des romans couvrant une période d'un siècle et demi environ (1856-1992) sont étudiés ici : Un été dans le Sahara d'Eugène Fromentin, Le désert de Pierre Loti, Ecrits sur le sable d'Isabelle Eberhardt, Un thé au Sahara (The Sheltering Sky) de Paul Bowles, Désert de J.-M. G. Le Clézio, Les marches de sable d'Andrée Chedid, Hypatie ou la fin des dieux de Jean Marcel, Les hommes qui marchent et Le siècle des sauterelles de Malika Mokeddem. Des textes situés à la croisée des cultures, provenant presque tous des différentes régions de la francophonie (France, Algérie, Egypte / Liban, Québec), qui nous conduisent au milieu des étendues pierreuses, rocailleuses, silencieuses, là où l'on se surprend parfois à frôler les précipices de la pensée.

In the mid-nineteenth century, French colonial leaders in Algeria started southward into the Sahara, beginning a fifty-year period of violence. Lying in the shadow of the colonization of northern Algeria, which claimed the lives of over a million people, French empire in the Sahara sought power through physical force as it had elsewhere; yet violence in the Algerian Sahara followed a more complicated logic than the old argument that it was simply a way to get empire on the cheap. A Desert Named Peace examines colonial violence through multiple stories and across several fields of research. It presents four cases: the military conquests of the French army in the oases and officers' predisposition to use extreme violence in colonial conflicts; a spontaneous nighttime attack made by Algerian pastoralists on a French village, as notable for its brutality as for its obscure causes; the violence of indigenous forms of slavery and the colonial accommodations that preserved it during the era of abolition; and the struggles of French Romantics whose debates about art and politics arrived from Paris with disastrous consequences. Benjamin Claude Brower uses these different perspectives to reveal the unexpected causes of colonial violence, such as France's troubled revolutionary past and its influence on the military's institutional culture, the aesthetics of the sublime and its impact on colonial thinking, the ecological crises suffered by Saharan pastoralists under colonial rule, and the conflicting paths to authority inherent in Algerian Sufism. Directly engaging a controversial history, A Desert Named Peace offers an important backdrop to understanding the Algerian war for independence (1954-1962) and Algeria's ongoing internal war, begun in 1992, between the government and armed groups that claim to fight for an Islamist revolution.

To the world they are known as Berbers, but they prefer to call themselves Imazighen, or “free people.” The claim to this unique cultural identity has been felt most acutely in Algeria in the Kabylia region, where an Amazigh consciousness gradually emerged after WWII. This is a valuable model for other Amazigh movements in North Africa, where the existence of an Amazigh language and culture is denied or dismissed in countries such as Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. By tracing the cultural production of the Kabyle people—their songs, oral traditions, and literature—from the early 1930s to the end of the twentieth century, Fazia Aïtel shows how they have defined their own culture over time, both within Algeria and in its diaspora. She analyzes the role of Amazigh identity in the works of novelists such as Mouloud Feraoun, Tahar Djaout, and Assia Djebar, and she investigates the intersection of Amazigh consciousness and the Beur movement in France. She also addresses the political and social role of the Kabyles in Algeria and in France, where after independence it was easier for the Berber community to express and organize itself. Ultimately, Aïtel argues that the Amazigh literary tradition is founded on dual priorities: the desire to foster a genuine dialogue while retaining a unique culture.
