Nel corso del '900 la semiotica si è progressivamente articolata in due direzioni. Da un lato si è consolidata la tradizione strutturale, che ha le sue origini nell'opera di Ferdinand de Saussure, passa attraverso la teoria di Louis Hjelmslev e la rielaborazione di Roland Barthes, confluisce nella semiotica generativa di Algirdas Julien Greimas. Secondo la prospettiva strutturale la semiotica studia i sistemi e i processi della significazione, concentrandosi sui testi e ricercandone i significati al loro interno. Dall'altro si è sviluppata la tradizione interpretativa, che ha le sue origini nel pragmatismo di Charles Sanders Peirce e trova la sua formulazione più compiuta nella teoria semiotica di Umberto Eco. Nella prospettiva interpretativa la semiotica si interroga su come diamo senso al mondo e one l'interprete al centro del processo di costruzione del senso. In questo volume, Traini evidenzia i fondamenti teorici e i nodi problematici di entrambe le tradizioni, per presentare poi i temi e le direzioni che caratterizzano la ricerca attuale: la sociosemiotica, il tema del corpo e dell'estesia, la semantica inferenziale ed esperenziale di Patrizia Violi.

The concept of 'populism' is currently used by scholars, the media and political actors to refer to multiple and disparate manifestations and phenomena from across both the left and the right ends of the political spectrum. As a result, it defies neat definition, as scholarship on the topic has shown over the last 50 years. In this book, Sebastián Moreno Barreneche approaches populism from a semiotic perspective and argues that it constitutes a specific social discourse grounded on a distinctive narrative structure that is brought to life by political actors that are labelled 'populist'. Conceiving of populism as a mode of semiotic production that is based on a conception of the social space as divided into two groups, 'the People' and 'the Other', this book uses semiotic theory to make sense of this political phenomenon. Exploring how the categories of 'the People' and 'the Other' are discursively constructed by populist political actors through the use of semiotic resources, the ways in which meaning emerges through the oppositions between imagined collective actors is explained. Drawing on examples from Europe, North America and South America, The Social Semiotics of Populism presents a systematic semiotic approach to this multifaceted political concept and bridges semiotic theory and populism studies in an original manner.

Collocato tra Segno e immagine (1960) e Teoria generale della critica (1974), Le due vie, uscito nel 1966, fa parte del grande trittico che attraversa la fase finale dell’estetica brandiana e che affronta la necessità di dare risposta ai nuovi interrogativi posti all’intelligenza filosofica e storico-critica dai frammentati sviluppi della ricerca artistica. Il perno del libro ruota attorno all’incrocio tra due elementi − appunto le due vie − nello stesso tempo complementari e incompatibili: l’“astanza”, cioè l’opera d’arte come pura presenza, e la “semiosi”, cioè l’opera d’arte come segno che rinvia ad altro da sé. Da tale impostazione discende l’atteggiamento dell’autore verso gli ultimi esiti delle arti contemporanee: né di ripulsa né di indifferenziata approvazione, piuttosto di sobria indagine teorica. Un’indagine che non poteva non confrontarsi con la semiotica, la “scienza dei segni” di cui Brandi − con la sorvegliata incompletezza della sua adesione − rivela in anticipo le eccessive e in gran parte mancate promesse. Nel capitolo Lo spettatore integrato, oltre a stilare una disamina storico-epocale dello “spirito del tempo” che contiene pagine di sorprendente preveggenza, Brandi − in una sorta di teoria della ricezione ante litteram − precorre i motivi salienti di quella che oggi chiameremmo “estetica relazionale”, attualmente al centro del dibattito critico e delle pratiche artistiche odierne. Le due vie è una delle fonti a cui risalgono gli interrogativi che oggi si pone chi continua a pensare che l’arte valga ancora la pena di essere pensata.
