This volume examines the Italian peninsula in the early Middle Ages by focusing on research fields such as ethnic identity, memory, and use of the past. Particular attention is devoted to the way some authors were influenced by their own ‘present’ in their reconstruction of the past. The political and cultural fragmentation of Italy during the early Middles Ages, created by the Lombards’ invasion of a part of the Peninsula in the late-sixth century and early-seventh century, Charlemagne’s conquest of a part of the Lombard Kingdom in 774, and by the weakening of the Byzantine Empire in the eighth and ninth centuries, make this part of Europe a special area for exploring continuities and discontinuities between the Roman and the post-Roman periods in Western Europe. Across the volume, Berto examines the problems that the features of primary sources and their scarcity pose to their interpretations. Raffaele Pettazzoni (1883–1959), Professor of the History of Religions at the University of Rome and one of the leading historians of religions in the twentieth century, maintained a long correspondence with Herbert Jennings Rose (1883–1961), the gifted Canadian scholar who was Professor of Greek at St Andrews and is best known for his work in the field of ancient religion and folklore. These letters, spanning the years 1927 to 1958, bear witness to the close relationship between the two scholars and focus on two of Pettazzoni’s books, both translated by Rose: Essays on the History of Religions (1954) and The All-Knowing God (1956). Why did Italo Calvino decide to translate Les Fleurs bleues by Raymond Queneau? Was his translation just a way to pay a tribute to one of his models? This study looks at Calvino's translation from a literary and linguistic perspective: Calvino's I fiori blu is more than a rewriting and a creative translation, as it contributed to a revolution in his own literary language and style. Translating Queneau, Calvino discovered a new fictional voice and explored the potentialities of his native tongue, Italian. In fact Calvino's writings show a visible evolution of poetics and style that occurred rather abruptly in the mid 1960s; this sudden change has long been debated. The radical transformation of his style was affected by several factors: Calvino's new interests in linguistics, in translation theory, and in the act of translation. Translation as Stylistic Evolution analyses several passages in detail and scrutinizes quantitative data obtained by comparing digital versions of the original and Calvino's translation. The results of such assessment of Calvino's text-consistency suggest clear interpretations of the motives behind Calvino's radical and remarkable change of style that are tied to his notion of creative translation.

Il volume restituisce un quadro complesso delle diverse forme di cultura del dissenso che dagli anni Cinquanta in poi interessano l’Ovest e l’Est europeo, come l’area francoitaliana e quella slavo-orientale (Russia, Bielorussia e Ucraina Sovietiche). Queste aree risultano contraddistinte dalla nascita di forme di contestazione nei confronti dell’establishment culturale e politico che si manifestano in modo antitetico (e con conseguenze diverse) sia in rapporto agli eventi storici che segnano il periodo 1956-1991, sia al tipo di stato in cui tali forme si diffondono. In una prospettiva analitica che privilegia la descrizione della nascita e dello sviluppo dei fenomeni controculturali, si propone per la prima volta un “atlante del dissenso”, propedeutico alla comprensione di un periodo nevralgico della storia europea, caratterizzato, dalla fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale in poi, dall’asse che separa l’Europa occidentale da quella orientale, compresa nella sfera di influenza del blocco sovietico.
