Eppure, a prescindere dalle epoche, gli aggettivi usati per descriverle sono sempre gli stessi: malvagie, mostruose, traditrici. In queste pagine, la classicista Natalie Haynes ribalta finalmente la prospettiva, presentandoci figure escluse e taciute (o forse silenziate),ma anche ingegnose e sfaccettate. Scardinando i pregiudizi e donando nuova linfa alla mitologia, l’autrice mette in primo piano le donne non per giustificarle o assolverle, ma per comprenderne le sfumature: con una scrittura acuta e tagliente, Haynes fa risuonare la loro voce autentica, delineando protagoniste affascinanti e complesse. Perché se i miti sono davvero lo specchio di noi stessi, allora non è possibile rifiutarsi di ascoltare anche l’altra versione di queste storie, l’altro lato dello specchio.

La prima infanzia è, sul piano educativo e pedagogico, una «scoperta» moderna o affonda le sue radici nella storia più antica? Per rispondere in maniera critica e documentata a questo interrogativo, l’autrice esplora in due volumi (vol. I Dall’antichità a Comenio, vol. II Da Locke alla contemporaneità) le concezioni pedagogiche e le pratiche educative che hanno, di fatto, accompagnato la condizione delle bambine e dei bambini nella fascia d’età compresa fra 0 e 3 anni dall’antichità fino ai giorni nostri. La ricostruzione è anche occasione per riscoprire le radici epistemologiche di una agoghé del pâis progressivamente finalizzata a gettare le basi di un’educazione capace di confrontarsi con i caratteri precipui della «natura umana». Dall’analisi della prima comparsa di un pensiero «intenzionalmente» pedagogico fra età antica ed età medievale (vol. I), si è passati (vol. II) allo studio della formulazione in età moderna e contemporanea di una pedagogia sistematica della prima infanzia, distinta (anche se mai separata) dai saperi della letteratura, della teologia, della filosofia. Il ricorso ad una pluralità di fonti storiche ha consentito di far emergere dai «silenzi dell’educazione» la figura ancora poco abbozzata dell’infans, riconosciuto però nel corso del tempo come portatore di un lógos in potenza e, in quanto tale, protagonista e destinatario di un’educazione secundum naturam.
