Lo scorcio dell’VIII e gli inizi del IX secolo segnarono nell’alto Adriatico una fase di intenso confronto politico e diplomatico tra Franchi e Bizantini, gli uni impegnati nel tentativo di imporre la loro supremazia sull’area istriano-dalmata e pannonica, gli altri decisi alla tenace difesa dei propri interessi nella regione. È sullo sfondo di questi avvenimenti che il patriarca Fortunato di Grado intraprese una politica di spregiudicate alleanze che avrebbe dovuto garantire la salvaguardia degli interessi della sua Chiesa, schierandosi con l’una o con l’altra parte ogniqualvolta il mutamento degli scenari “internazionali” mettesse a repentaglio il perseguimento di tale obiettivo. Il “testamento” di Fortunato, di cui si presentano qui una traduzione e un commento, costituisce una fonte di eccezionale interesse e fascino per la ricostruzione della parabola politica e umana di questo personaggio e di un capitolo di cruciale importanza nella storia dell’Adriatico altomedievale.

Chris Wickham re-examines documentary and archaeological sources to give a detailed account of both individual economies, and their relationships with each other. Chris Wickham offers a new account of the Mediterranean economy in the tenth to twelfth centuries, based on a completely new look at the sources, documentary and archaeological. Our knowledge of the Mediterranean economy is based on syntheses which are between 50 and 150 years old; they are based on outdated assumptions and restricted data sets, and were written before there was any usable archaeology; and Wickham contends that they have to be properly rethought. This is the first book ever to give a fully detailed comparative account of the regions of the Mediterranean in this period, in their internal economies and in their relationships with each other. It focusses on Egypt, Tunisia, Sicily, the Byzantine empire, Islamic Spain and Portugal, and north-central Italy, and gives the first comprehensive account of the changing economies of each; only Byzantium has a good prior synthesis. It aims to force our rethinking of how economies worked in the medieval Mediterranean. It also offers a rethinking of how we should understand the underlying logic of the medieval economy in general.

Throughout early modern Europe, patronage became a means for the dominant classes to highlight their wealth, intellectual finesse, and cultural and political agendas, particularly within the court and religious institutions. Musical events like operas and carnival parades were an especially essential component of this patronage. However, the ways in which music patronage changed during the second half of the seventeenth century have largely remained underexplored. At the time, profound social and cultural transformations influenced the production and consumption of music in radical and permanent ways, not least through the influence of the Colonna family - Prince Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna and his wife Maria Mancini. Two of the most active patrons of seventeenth-century Italy, they were particularly active in the musical life of Rome. Through their sponsorship of an unprecedented number of operas, serenatas, and oratorios, they supported the careers of the most prominent composers, librettists, and musicians of the period. A new exploration of this period of music patronage, The Politics of Princely Entertainment follows Lorenzo Onofrio and Maria beyond the borders of Rome and through their far-reaching personal and institutional travels - to Venice, Naples, and the Kingdom of Aragon. Venezia prima di Venezia è l'arcipelago dalle tante isole sulle quali, secondo il mito di fondazione di una delle pochissime città nate durante il medioevo, avrebbero trovato rifugio le popolazioni in fuga dai barbari. Ma la realtà storica è diversa dal mito. All'inizio del medioevo si formò lentamente nella laguna veneta un centro urbano, prima chiamato Rialto e poi Venezia. Un piccolo insediamento lagunare dell'alto Adriatico, erede di una vasta regione dell'impero romano, la Venetia et Histria, che un tempo si estendeva dall'Istria al fiume Adda. Il libro ricostruisce lo sviluppo del ducato veneziano nel corso dei secoli VI-VIII a partire dalle strutture militari bizantine, in un rapporto dinamico sia con i poteri di terraferma (il regno longobardo e poi l'impero carolingio), sia con quelli con base in Oriente e sul mare (Bisanzio, e poi gli Slavi e i Saraceni). Si formò così una comunità politica che nel corso dei secoli IX e X seppe creare le basi per la sua straordinaria crescita commerciale nel Mediterraneo. Il libro mostra anche il volto materiale della nuova città: le case, le chiese, gli edifici del potere pubblico e religioso. Una città che era quasi esclusivamente di legno, con pochi edifici in mattone e pietra, e che – per quanto costruita sull'acqua – di acqua era povera. Così come aveva bisogno di terra e perciò di bonifiche per stare all'asciutto e per allargare lo spazio abitabile. Non meno importante è la descrizione delle traiettorie degli altri insediamenti 'perdenti' della laguna – Metamauco, Torcello, Equilo, Cittanova – in un momento in cui la competizione all'interno della laguna non aveva ancora decretato un vincitore.
