Joseph Silk est célèbre pour avoir fait le lien entre les minuscules fluctuations qui ont résulté du Big Bang et les majestueuses galaxies qui peuplent aujourd’hui notre ciel. Car, bien avant que les satellites COBE, Planck ou WMAP ne cartographient le fond de rayonnement cosmique et ne donnent un instantané de l’Univers juste après le Big Bang, la cosmologie théorique dut aller de spéculations hasardeuses en observations plus ou moins fiables pour construire le scénario aujourd’hui admis. Il est donc question ici de la naissance de l’Univers et de sa structure à grande échelle, mais aussi de la notion d’univers multiples, du principe anthropique, de l’apparition de la conscience et de la possibilité du voyage dans le temps. Plus crucialement encore, la cosmologie relie la question de l’avenir de l’Univers à celle de la quantité de matière qu’il contient. Les mystérieuses « matière noire » et « énergie sombre » décideront ainsi, entre effondrement et expansion éternelle, du destin de notre Univers. Joseph Silk est chercheur à l’Institut d’astrophysique de Paris et au CEA de Saclay. Il enseigne également à l’Université Johns-Hopkins et, en tant que professeur émérite, à l’Université d’Oxford. Prix Balzan international en 2011, il est l’auteur de nombreux livres de vulgarisation, dont Le Big Bang et L’Univers et l’Infini.
