Comment joindre le geste nécessaire à une parole chrétienne éminemment prophétique ? Comment, dans le respect de l'Evangile, rendre aux gestes leur charge subversive ? C'est là le propos de cet essai qui s'inscrit au coeur d'une réflexion théologique contemporaine. Henry Mottu s'attache à rappeler certains gestes surprenants des prophètes tels que les évoque la Bible hébraïque et dans le prolongement desquels s'inscrivent ceux du Christ. Pour l'auteur, le fondement biblique des actes ecclésiaux est d'abord prophétique, et cette origine fondatrice, quand elle est assumée, permet une dynamique de première force pour un renouvellement des attitudes ecclésiales. Elle s'érige notamment en référence critique quand le sacrement régresse dans le sacramentalisme et ne parle plus qu'aux initiés. Dans son essai, Henry Mottu fait largement recours aux diverses scènes de l'histoire et de l'actualité pour éprouver sa démarche au contact de ce qui réussit à y faire sens. A ce titre, ce livre est une contribution de première importance à l'entreprise de refondation des modes de communication de la foi chrétienne au monde d'aujourd'hui.

Dans la crise mondiale, écologique et économique, sociale et politique que nous traversons, la coexistence juste et pacifique des hommes devient un enjeu crucial. L'ampleur des crimes commis au XXe siècle pourrait laisser sceptique quant à notre capacité à relever un tel défi. Pourtant, ce même siècle a vu surgir un recours nouveau : le pardon. Jusque-là privilège de la conscience religieuse individuelle, il s'est invité au plan politique, avec succès. Depuis 1950 en effet, de nombreux pays ont recouru au pardon pour constituer un espace politique durable là où des violences destructrices avaient dominé. Trois cas attirent l'attention : l'Europe, les Commissions vérité et réconciliation et les instances juridiques internationales. Les contours d'un pardon politique se dessinent. En retour se pose la question de sa réception par chacun. La phénoménologie est convoquée : elle conduit à une distinction radicale entre coupables et victimes, privilégiant parmi elles les plus fragiles. L'herméneutique prend alors le relai d'une anthropologie devenue aporétique, esquissant avec le pardon, le geste par lequel l'homme advient. Dans ce parcours, Paul Ricoeur, interlocuteur privilégié, sera rejoint par d'autres : Jean Monnet, Maïti Girtanner, Hannah Arendt ou Simon Wiesenthal.

Berthault de Villbresmes, a prominent lawyer and adviser to Charles d'Orleans, completed this prose version of the first three branches of The Old French Crusade Cycle some time between 1465 and 1473. He undertook his "compendieuse translacion" of the Swan Knight story at the request of Charle's widow, Marie de Cleves. Daughter of Lamarck, Marie had a particular interest in this matter for the house of Cleves had claimed descent from Helias, the fabulous grandfather of Godfroy of Bouillon some time after the extinction of the house of Bouillon-Boulogne. It is tis particular interest that explains why Berthault's adaptation of the Old French epic matter stops short of the account of the Crusade proper even though the First Crusade continued at the time to be a powerful stimulus to the literary imagination.Berthault de Villebresmes's La Geste du Chevalier au Cygne will be especially welcome to all concerned with the recovery and study of late medieval literature and with the linguistic analysis of Middle French.
