L'ancien Testament nous présente le roi Salomon, censé avoir régné sur le royaume d'Israël au xe siècle av. J.-C., et bâtisseur du premier Temple de Jérusalem comme un sage, auteur de proverbes et de chansons, grand connaisseur des secrets des plantes et des animaux, mais non comme un magicien. L'historien juif Flavius Josèphe le présente comme ayant écrit 3000 livres d'exorcismes et d'incantations contre les maladies engendrées par les démons. Le premier livre de magie qui lui a été effectivement attribué est le Testament de Salomon, écrit en grec, entre le Ier siècle et le Ve siècle, probablement à Babylone ou en Égypte, les plus anciens manuscrits datant du Ve siècle. Il ne fut traduit en latin, en hébreu et en arabe que plusieurs siècles après. L'Islam et le coran le décrivent comme étant prophète et roi d'Israël, Il avait le don de parler à certains animaux, était très connu pour sa sagesse, Dieu lui donna le don de maîtriser les vents, puis lui offrit l'anneau connu sous le nom du " sceau de Salomon " qui lui permit de commander les génies (Djinns) ainsi que les démons (Shayatine). Toutes ces créatures étaient soumises à ses ordres, même les plus puissantes, et ce sont ces créatures qui lui enseignèrent les sciences occultes. Au cours des siècles divers textes de magie furent attribués à Salomon. Clavicula Salomonis (La Petite clef de Salomon, ou Lemegeton) est le nom latin donné aux différents grimoires de magie attribués à Salomon à partir de 1310. Il existe aujourd'hui 113 manuscrits portant le titre Clavicula Salomonis (ou un titre dérivé) datés entre le XVe siècle et le XVIIIe siècle et 9 dont la datation est indéterminée, ce qui porte à 122 le nombre total de ces manuscrits. Les langues dans lesquelles ils furent rédigés sont le latin, l'italien, le français, l'anglais, l'allemand, le néerlandais et le tchèque. Il existerait aussi des manuscrits écrit en hébreu, et peut-être un en arabe. Ces manuscrits contiennent des formules de magie cérémonielle pour conjurer les anges des ténèbres, ainsi que des rituels et symboles pour provoquer l'amour, punir ses ennemis, se rendre invisible... Ce manuscrit Français du XVIIe siècle, traduit de l'hébreux en langue latine par le Rabbin Abognazar et adapté par l'Archevêque d'Arles (1634) fut édité une première fois en 1892 par Chamuel et F. Fyot (Yves Plessis) sous la forme de reproduction photographique, en tirage très limitée. Le Lemegeton est l'un des nombreux manuscrits de magie qui circulaient dans l'Europe du XVIIe siècle. Ce document inestimable est ici reproduit dans sa version originale afin de conserver pour le lecteur et les spécialistes de magie la version manuscrite du vieux français et la lecture originelle des talismans.Contrairement aux grimoires ultérieurs tels que le Pseudomonarchia Daemonum (XVIe siècle) ou le Lemegeton (XVIIe siècle), la Clavicule de Salomon ne mentionne pas la signature des 72 esprits contraints par le roi Salomon dans un vase en bronze. Comme dans la plupart des grimoires médiévaux, toutes les opérations magiques sont prétendument accomplies avec la puissance de Dieu, auquel toutes les invocations lui sont adressées. Avant que toutes opérations (nommé « expérimentations ») soient effectuées, l'opérateur doit confesser ses péchés et se purifier du mal, en invoquant la protection de Dieu. Des préparatifs élaborés sont nécessaires, et chacun des nombreux articles utilisés lors des « expérimentations » effectuées par l'opérateur doit être construit avec les matériaux appropriés et obtenus de la manière prescrite, à l'heure astrale appropriée, marqué avec un ensemble précis de symboles magiques, et béni avec ses propres mots précis. Toutes les substances nécessaires pour les schémas de magie et les amulettes sont détaillées, ainsi que les façons de les purifier et de les préparer. Beaucoup de symboles incorporent l'alphabet occulte Transitus Fluvii.
