Au fil de cette "Chronique", pour laquelle Xavier Brocker a tenu à embrasser le sujet qui lui est cher, dès la première expression du Jazz en Lorraine, en 1917, le lecteur est assuré de passer de la gravité au cocasse ; de l'émotion à l'hilarité ; de la surprise à... l'incrédulité. Et pourtant, tout est vrai. La grande Histoire et les petites historiettes du "Jazz en Lorraine", depuis les "Sammies" de la Grande-Guerre, jusqu'aux "punkies" d'aujourd'hui, si elles ne manquent pas de pittoresque, permettront aussi, plus sérieusement, de contrebattre bien des idées reçues. Évidemment, pour que pareille "fresque" soit non seulement digeste, mais savoureuse, il fallait que le style, lui aussi, soit syncopé. Faisant fi, une fois encore, des conventions, cet ouvrage simule le "patchwork", sans parvenir à cacher une construction rigoureuse, alternant, parfois au sein de la même phrase, la noble prosodie classique, et les saillies du "parler" quotidien. De cette "écriture" insolite est né, peut-être, un "livre qui swingue" ? Telle a été l'intention de l'auteur. Dès ses années estudiantines, Xavier Brocker avait marqué un vif intérêt pour les activités associatives bénévoles de caractère artistique et culturel. Il a été, notamment, président du "Hot-Club de Nancy", puis du "Centre culturel lorrain universitaire" ; a participé ensuite aux travaux de création et d'aménagements de l'éphémère "Club culturel universitaire de la Commanderie" ; enfin, il prit une part déterminante, dès 1973, à l'essor du Festival "Nancy Jazz Pulsations", confrontation musicale d'envergure mondiale, dont il était toujours, en 1991, l'un des conseillers artistiques et président de son "association de soutien". "Agitateur culturel..." "Infatigable propagandiste musical..." "Mobilisé en permanence contre le prêt-à-penser"..., tels sont quelques-uns des qualificatifs (et nous n'avons retenu que les plus aimables) que s'est attiré, et s'attire encore, l'auteur du présent ouvrage, tout au long des trois dernières décennies.

With a confidante’s insights, Marta Dvořák sets up an innovative connection between Mavis Gallant’s dazzling writing and the whole spectrum of the arts. She simultaneously engages with the feats of art making and the adventures of reading, looking, and listening. Drawing on private correspondence and conversations with the Gallant she repositions as a late modernist, Dvořák investigates the relationships between the Paris-based master of the short story and visual and sound culture. Through the filter of philosophical aesthetics, she identifies the painterly, cinematic, and musical dynamics which light up Gallant’s craft. At the same time, she opens a dialogue between Gallant and other international modernists and with those they were reading, watching, and listening to, from the moving pictures which shaped Gallant’s generation to the rhythm and dissonance of, say, Stravinsky and jazz, which − like the Cubist rupture with spatial perspective − spearheaded modernity’s aesthetics of breakage. How does Gallant’s work work? Dvořák’s hands-on rhetorical analyses of Gallant’s stories and lesser-known, recently reissued novels illuminate the superb stylist’s language and vision via an emphasis on both image and rhythm. This collection focuses on Lowry’s spatial dynamics, from the psychogeography of the Letterist and the Situationist International, through musical forms (especially jazz), cinema, photography, and spatial poetic writing, to the spaces of exception, bio-politics, and the creaturely.
