Singulière entreprise en vérité que celle de ce Labyrinthe du Monde, écrit de 1972 à la mort de son auteur le 17 décembre 1987, où Mademoiselle de Crayencour n'est pas encore anagrammée en Yourcenar. Elle y évoque en Pythie sagace et sereine ses aïeux à partir de traces mémorielles, lettres, souvenirs pieux, journaux intimes, photographies ; mais quel fil d'Ariane a-t-elle caché dans la trame de ces récits intimes à l'instar de Henry James qu'elle traduisit ? Elle l'avoue peut-être ici : «Le tracé d'une vie humaine est aussi complexe que l'image d'une galaxie.» Aussi rappelle-t-elle d'entre les morts sa lignée, s'interrogeant elle-même : «Quel était votre visage avant que votre père et votre mère se fussent rencontrés ?» Projet d'invocation ultime car «il ne faut pas s'encombrer trop tôt des fantômes de la famille» ; projet sûrement voué à l'inachèvement que cette recherche des vies perdues qui fondent obscurément un être humain. Ici, peu à peu, se dessine le visage énigmatique et pourtant sans secrets d'une enfant, d'une jeune fille plus vraie peut-être que «les factices jeunes filles de Proust», que ne légitime ni le sang ni ces gens disparus, mais, sans doute, cet «élément inanalysable» que Yourcenar choisit de nommer l'âme.

Le livre de Marguerite Yourcenar commence par le récit d'une naissance : la sienne. De ce point de départ elle s'interroge. D'où vient-elle ? Qui fut sa mère, morte presque aussitôt ? Qui fut son père ? Ces deux familles dont elle est issue, que peut-elle en savoir, à travers les épaisseurs du temps ? Personne ne rend sensible comme elle l'existence d'âge en âge des êtres en un lieu donné, et le fait que les générations sur le même coin de terre s'entassent comme des strates géologiques, côte à côte avec les bêtes et les plantes. Le récit s'accompagne à chaque pas de commentaires qui sont des coups de projecteurs dans le brouillard de toute vie. Si bien que d'une histoire à peu près ordinaire ou commune Marguerite Yourcenar a fait une œuvre extraordinaire, où la rigueur le dispute à la compassion, où le plus grand art et le plus discret est au service d'une rare noblesse de cœur.
