This study of Greek time before Aristotle’s philosophy starts with a commentary on his first text, the Protrepticus. We shall see two distinct forms of time emerge: one initiatory, circular and Platonic in inspiration, the other its diametrical opposite, advanced by Aristotle. We shall explore this dichotomy through a return to poetic conceptions. The Tragedians will give us an initial outline of the notion of time in the Greek world (Fate); we shall then turn to Homer in order to better grasp the complex relations between time and the religious sphere (the Hero); the work of the great theologian Hesiod will confirm this initiatory vision, later set out in remarkable fashion by Nietzsche (Myths); we shall then dive deep into Pythagoreanism to complete our account (Mysteries). Having understood this current of thought, powerfully influenced by the Iranian theogony, we shall be able to discern its clear differences from the so-called “Ionian” current, and thus to move away from Plato (Ideology). Lastly, we shall return to the early Ionian thinkers Thales and Anaximander to analyse whether this really was the vision of the world that Aristotle adopted in developing the first model of time (Science). In the second volume we shall see the return of the thought of the theologoi within the Aristotelian corpus itself, and will question our distinction between the being and existence of time. - FREE EBOOK VERSION : http://editions-villegagnons.com/philosophy.htm -TRADUCTION : This book is also available in french with this title "Métaphysique du temps chez Aristote. This collection of articles is an important milestone in the history of the study of time conceptions in Greek and Roman Antiquity. It spans from Homer to Neoplatonism. Conceptions of time are considered from different points of view and sources. Reflections on time were both central and various throughout the history of ancient philosophy. Time was a topic, but also material for poets, historians and doctors. Importantly, the contributions also explore implicit conceptions and how language influences our thought categories.

LE TEMPS N'EST PAS SEULEMENT UN THEME DISCUTE DANS LES DIALOGUES DE PLATON, MAIS AUSSI CE QUI PORTE, VOIRE EXIGE TOUTE ACTIVITE PHILOSOPHIQUE. L'HOMME ET MEME SON AME QUI EST CENSEE ETRE IMMORTELLE, NE POSSEDENT AUCUN MOYEN DE S'ARRACHER DU TEMPS. AVANT TOUTE THEMATISATION EXPLICITE DU TEMPS, LA PHILOSOPHIE SE PRESENTE DEMBLEE COMME UN EFFORT DE MAITRISER ET DE REGULARISER LE TEMPS HUMAIN, CELUI QUE VIVENT LES HOMMES DANS LES CITES. CE TEMPS DU DEVENIR QUI OSCILLE SANS CESSE ENTRE LA CROISSANCE ET LA DESTRUCTION, EST A L'OPPOSE DU TEMPS REGULIER DES MOUVEMENTS CELESTES. C'EST ENTRE CES DEUX DOMAINES QUE SE CONSTITUE LA PHILOSOPHIE COMME LEUR LIEN. OR SI LA REPUBLIQUE ET LE TIMEE DE PLATON NOUS PERMETTENT DE COMPRENDRE LA CONSTITUTION ET LE ROLE DE CE LIEN; ILS NOUS APPRENNENT EGALEMENT L'IMPOSSIBILITE D'UNE RECONCILIATION FINALE DES DEUX TEMPORALITES IRREDUCTIBLEMENT DIFFERENTES. AUCUNE PHILOSOPHIE NE SAURAIT REMPLACER LA POLITIQUE EN TANT QU'ART DE RAPPORTS ENTRE LES HOMMES.

A groundbreaking and wide-ranging presentation of Plutarch’s ethics based on the cosmological foundation of his ethical thought Plutarch of Chaeronea (c. 45-120 CE) is the most prolific and influential moral philosopher in the Platonic tradition. This book is a fundamental reappraisal of Plutarch’s ethical thought. It shows how Plutarch based his ethics on his particular interpretation of Plato’s cosmology: our quest for the good life should start by considering the good cosmos in which we live. The practical consequences of this cosmological foundation permeate various domains of Greco-Roman life: the musician, the organiser of a drinking party, and the politician should all be guided by cosmology. After exploring these domains, this book offers in-depth interpretations of two works which can only be fully understood by paying attention to cosmological aspects: Dialogue on Love and On Tranquillity of Mind.

This volume seeks to show how the philosophy of Plato relates to the literary form of his discourse. Myth is one aspect of this relation whose importance for the study of Plato is only now beginning to be recognized. Reflection on this topic is essential not only for understanding Plato’s conception of philosophy and its methods, but also for understanding more broadly the relation between philosophy and literature. The twenty chapters of this volume, contributed by scholars of diverse backgrounds and approaches, elucidate the various uses and statuses of Platonic myths in the first place by reflecting on myth per se and in the second place by focusing on a specific myth in the Platonic corpus.

[This book is written in French.]
