A 16 ans, bras et jambes démangent. Mauvaise graine, le jeune Richard Castanier quitte sa famille de petits propriétaires vignerons dans le Bordelais pour voler de ses propres ailes. Bientôt, il pourra voir grand et envisager de quitter son smoking de petit flibustier pour un habit conforme à sa condition de businessman aux commandes... d'un spaghetti chop à Manhattan ! Londres ? New York ? Paris ? Caracas ? Partagé entre l'amitié d'un réfugié roumain qu'il a pris sous son aile et l'amour d'une amazone de luxe qui lui fait miroiter de beaux lendemains en Amérique du Sud, Richard, grignoté par le remords de ses friponneries, usé par les roueries comme les coques des navires le sont par le sel des océans, ne sait plus trop où il en est... Ce récit de formation à la hussarde, habile et nerveux, témoignage exceptionnel et réjouissant (parfois tragique) sur les coulisses du Grand Luxe, se situe au coeur de ces Années Folles qui battaient pavillon cosmopolite. Sous le masque de Richard Castanier, se dissimule Luccin lui-même, imbattable pour mêler la part du faux à celle du vrai - mais qui réchappa réellement de l'incendie du Georges-Philippar où le grand reporter Albert Londres disparut corps et âme. Pierre Luccin publia sept romans durant une courte période, après quoi il cessa toute activité littéraire pour se consacrer à la production et au commerce du vin. Le marin en smoking est son chef-d'oeuvre.
