S'il fut de courte durée - moins d'un demi-siècle -, le Protectorat sur le Maroc a laissé une trace majeure dans l'histoire de la France coloniale et a suscité de nombreux ouvrages dominés par la personnalité exceptionnelle de Lyautey l'Africain. Mais l'ouverture récente des " archives de gestion " et l'apport de multiples témoignages permettent de porter un regard neuf sur le processus déclenché en 1912 dans un très vieux royaume par sa mise sous tutelle, et d'y déceler la succession de deux Protectorats. Pendant douze ans, Lyautey, " un vieux lord colonial de la IIIe République ", impose avec éclat - au point d'être taxé d'" indigénofolie " - des conceptions qui sont à l'opposé de celles du milieu ultra-colonial dominant alors à Paris. À la période exaltante et créatrice de ce premier Protectorat, succèdent trois décennies durant lesquelles les Marocains redeviennent peu à peu, après la fin de la " pacification " et la dure guerre du Rif, les acteurs de leur propre histoire, sous le règne du sultan Mohammed ben Youssef. Le deuxième Protectorat s'engage sur une phase déclinante : l'expérience de Lyautey n'a pas été comprise ; ses successeurs - parfois ses disciples comme Noguès ou Labonne - sont paralysés par la carence de Paris qui ne peut définir une politique nord-africaine ; et si le Maroc n'est pas pour l'Etat républicain la bonne affaire que vante la propagande impériale, il l'est pour nombre d'expatriés venus d'Europe. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, qui a vu la montée des nationalismes dans tous les empires coloniaux, le Protectorat se prolonge inutilement et le rêve de Lyautey s'achève en 1956 sur le retour triomphal de Mohammed V, après l'ultime et honteux faux pas de la IVe République qui avait déporté le futur roi à Madagascar.

Queer Postcolonial Narratives and the Ethics of Witnessing is a critical study of the relationship between bodies, memories and communal witnessing. With a focus on the aesthetics and politics of queer postcolonial narratives, this book examines how unspeakable traumas of colonial and familial violence are communicated through the body. Hired Daughters examines a fading tradition of domestic service in which rural girls familiar to ordinary Moroccan families were placed in their homes until marriage. In this tradition of "bringing up," the girls are considered "daughters of the house," and part of their role in the family is to help with the housework. Gradually, this tradition is transforming into one in which workers unfamiliar to their host families are paid a wage and may not stay long, but where the Islamic ethics of charity, religious reward, and gratitude still inform expectations on both sides. Mary Montgomery examines why Moroccans so often talk about their domestic workers as daughters, what this means for workers and employers, and how this is changing in contemporary Morocco. Prioritizing the experiences and perspectives of these women, Montgomery charts the tension that has developed between socially embedded, loyal domestic workers who operate within narratives of kinship and obligation and women who seek greater individualization, privacy, and self-empowerment. This book argues that the clash of civilizations that is supposed to be a feature of the post-Cold War environment is not necessarily caused by the dogma of world religions or cultural incompatibilities but by the inflexible and hegemonic universalisms that have characterized world history since 1492a cultural outlook that Majid terms post-Andalusianism. The all-encompassing worldviews of Euro-American ideologies have resulted in the retreat of Islam and other non-European traditions into dangerous orthodoxies and a growing climate of suspicion, fear, and terror. Freedom and Orthodoxy offers an alternative to perennial discord, suggesting that the world needs a philosophy of the provincial, one that reattaches individuals and societies to their heritages and memories but connects them to the rest of the world in solid, non-alienating, meaningful ways.
