Les Cahiers de l'hermétisme consacrés à « Magie et littérature », contiennent les Actes du Colloque, qui s'est tenu à Bordeaux et a réuni, à l'initiative du Centre de recherches sur l'imaginaire, des chercheurs venus d'horizons divers, soucieux de travailler en collaboration, en définissant des axes de convergence dans leur approche des objets et des phénomènes. S'il est vrai que la magie implique une "poésie de la nature", on ne voit pas pourquoi la connaissance scientifique l'exclurait. Faut-il considérer qu'en ingérant un savoir ordonné, on perd le sens de l'étonnement ? La précision technique d'un Cardan, d'un Kepler, d'un d'Alembert, d'un Teilhard de Chardin, d'un Hubert Reeves, n'exclut ni le pouvoir lyrique, ni la capacité d'émerveillement. Vercors, prenant le relais d'Edgar Morin, dans un débat qui a illustré, en 1965 déjà, ce sujet qui reste actuel, disait que "la science s'attaque aux vrais et innombrables mystères" qui sont ceux des faits communs. Un des caractères communs de la théorie et de la pratique magiques, de la conception des hypothèses scientifiques, et de l'élaboration des textes littéraires, consiste dans un usage approprié de la fonction métaphorisante, véritable instrument "créatif", qui perturbe le "dispositif" communément reçu. Ces études nous convient à une prospection des usages de la métaphore, dans un domaine vaste et varié, qui va de la Circé gréco-latine à l'enchanteur médiéval, du jeteur de sorts gascon, à la littérature antillaise et zaïroise, de Shakespeare à Vigny et à Raymond Abellio, de Goethe à Henri Michaux, du discours des gens de la glèbe, à celui des gens de pouvoir.
