Die Autoren des Bandes fragen nach der Rolle der Bilder bei der Herausbildung einer Identitat des Jesuitenordens. Die Schaffung einer "jesuitischen Identitat" wird in den verschiedenen Beitragen als ein Ideal des Ordens verstanden, das uber alle ordensinternen Heterogenitaten hinweg zu vermitteln versucht wurde. Charakteristisch fur die Jesuiten war eine Kultur des Wandels in einer sich wandelnden Welt, einer permanenten individuellen Akkommodation und Neuerfindung, die mit einer Vielzahl von Identitaten verbunden war. Vor allem die enorme Mobilitat der Ordensmitglieder im Raum und in ihren Aufgaben und Handlungen ging mit Spannungen einher, die eine Neu- oder Umordnung tradierter Wissens- und Wissenschaftshierarchien erforderlich machte. Unter diesem Gesichtspunkt erscheinen gerade die vom Orden und seinen Mitgliedern aufgenommenen visuellen Strategien als formgebende Prozesse, die sowohl in den Orden hinein als auch uber ihn hinaus wirken sollten. Die Beitrage beschaftigen sich daher sowohl mit Bildtheorien, die im Jesuitenorden eine grosse Rolle spielten, als auch mit fur den Orden besonders bedeutsamen Bildern sowie mit der Frage nach der Rolle des Wissens und der Visualisierung der Ordensidentitat."

L'espace doit être "habité", occupé, transcendé, augmenté. Les images de toutes natures dont la peinture, générées, exploitées et trafiquées sous toutes les formes possibles, détournements, déconstructions, transformations ou recompositions, occupent et inondent l'espace social contemporain en permanence. Des références culturelles majeures, Vermeer ou Manet parmi d'autres, sont mises à contribution et à profit. Il s'agit de repères aisément reconnaissables et identifiables, constitutifs d'un système référentiel. L'art occupe cette fonction de produire un cadre symbolique qui répond aux interrogations des sociétés. Des questionnements constituent l'origine de ce propos sur la représentation dans son contexte. Est-il raisonnable de peindre des chevaux bleus ?, Comment représente-t-on ce que l'on n'a pas vu ?, Comment se constitue un système référentiel ? En cascade, d'autres interrogations viennent à l'esprit. Un paysage peut-il être le sujet d'un tableau ? Une banane peut-elle dépasser sa valeur d'usage alimentaire ? La représentation a-t-elle besoin d'un sujet tangible ? Des artistes comme Carracci, Cattelan, Malevitch ou Van der Heyden, ont, parmi d'autres, bouleversé et changé le système de représentation dominant de leur époque. La contextualisation permet de saisir comment la peinture dit le monde et comment le monde fait la peinture. Un itinéraire en 24 tableaux balise un parcours de la Renaissance à nos jours. il s'agit de mettre en évidence des clefs de lecture qui donne accès à une interprétation des oeuvres dans une perspective de macrocontextualisation. De fait, la Renaissance marque une rupture graduelle avec le Moyen-Âge quant aux aspects de la représentation. Les protagonistes du monde artistique cherchent à résoudre de nouvelles équations qui ne constituaient pas les préoccupations majeures de la représentation iconique médiévale. Ces processus s'inscrivent dans la longue durée, les choses ne se font pas du jour au lendemain, mais pas à pas, parfois en tâtonnant, parfois plus brutalement. La représentation et ses mutations montrent de nombreux exemples où tout semble s'effondrer, se reconstruire, prendre une autre direction. Le changement peut sembler radical. De fait, il participe du temps long, de la maturation, de la gestation. Il traduit une perception qui arrive à son terme pour renaître autrement, en agglomérant, en agrégeant, en mixant, en innovant et en expérimentant. Une évolution des mentalités qui puise partout où elle peut pour changer le scénario de la narration. Les révolutions en art ne sont jamais qu'un itinéraire sociétal qui change de vitesse, accélère ou décélère, avec l'idée de questionner le point focal de ce qui fait sens. Maurizio Cattelan n'est jamais que le petit-fils caché de Botticelli. Ils ont en commun d'être l'acteur clef d'un contexte qui aspire son temps, l'ingurgite, l'interroge, l'interprète et le transfigure. Le Portrait de Simonetta Vespucci et The Comedian sont la même face d'un processus. Le moment contextuel de l'art est à la croisée des chemins de tous les processus. L'art et le système de représentation constituent un tournant dans la perception qu'à une société d'elle-même à un moment donné de son existence. Il est le point de reconnaissance et d'appartenance de toutes les civilisations. Il est aussi l'étalon nourrissant les sociétés. Une société sans image n'existe pas. L'art est un carrefour, un croisement inévitable. La contextualisation d'une oeuvre se situe et trouve sa justification à différents niveaux du territoire de l'interprétation. Ainsi d'un point de vue conceptuel, elle consiste à situer le tableau dans l'espace global d'un système culturel et référentiel. Elle est transversale et permet une vision panoramique. En cela, elle englobe les autres niveaux d'appréhension qui la prolongent et permettent de fournir

In her Introduction, Tymieniecka states the core theme of the present book sharply: Is culture an excess of nature's prodigious expansiveness - an excess which might turn out to be dangerous for nature itself if it goes too far - or is culture a 'natural', congenial prolongation of nature-life? If the latter, then culture is assimilated into nature and thus would lose its claim to autonomy: its criteria would be superseded by those of nature alone. Of course, nature and culture may both still be seen as being absorbed by the inner powers of specifically human inwardness, on which view, human being, caught in its own transcendence, becomes separated radically in kind from the rest of existence and may not touch even the shadow of reality except through its own prism. Excess, therefore, or prolongation? And on what terms? The relationship between culture and nature in its technical phase demands a new elucidation. Here this is pursued by excavating the root significance of the 'multiple rationalities' of life. In contrast to Husserl, who differentiated living types according to their degree of participation in the world, the phenomenology of life disentangles living types from within the ontopoietic web of life itself. The human creative act reveals itself as the Great Divide of the Logos of Life - a divide that does not separate but harmonizes, thus dispelling both naturalistic and spiritualistic reductionism.
