La période classique (Ve-IVe siècles) est la plus célèbre de l’histoire de la Grèce, la plus célébrée aussi. Elle a exercé une véritable fascination sur les siècles suivants grâce aux témoignages littéraires, architecturaux ou artistiques qu’elle a laissés à la postérité. Cette fascination n’est pas allée sans distorsions des réalités contemporaines, moins aisées à comprendre qu’il n’y paraît au premier abord. L’importance et le poids d’Athènes durant ces deux siècles a en effet occulté la diversité du reste du monde grec, tandis que l’appropriation par les civilisations occidentales du « miracle grec » a contribué à donner à cette période l’image d’un apogée dans tous les secteurs de la civilisation. De fait, de Marathon à Chéronée, de Miltiade à Démosthène en passant par Périclès, Hérodote, Thucydide, Eschyle, Sophocle, Euripide, Aristophane, Phidias, Praxitèle, Platon ou Aristote, c’est Athènes qui semble fournir le fil conducteur à l’histoire, donner le ton à la civilisation du temps et préciser le cadre d’un éternel grec, dans ses réussites comme dans ses échecs. Mais Athènes n’est pas la Grèce et la vision idyllique d’un monde est ici discutée et partiellement remise en cause, au travers des événements, mais aussi des grands domaines de l’histoire (politique, société, culture, religion), pour aboutir à des conclusions plus nuancées sur une période qui demeure extraordinaire.

Despite the developing emphasis in current scholarship on children in Roman culture, there has been relatively little research to date on the role and significance of the youngest children within the family and in society. This volume singles out this youngest age group, the under one-year-olds, in the first comprehensive study of infancy and earliest childhood to encompass the Roman Empire as a whole: integrating social and cultural history with archaeological evidence, funerary remains, material culture, and the iconography of infancy, it explores how the very particular historical circumstances into which Roman children were born affected their lives as well as prevailing attitudes towards them. Examination of these varied strands of evidence, drawn from throughout the Roman world from the fourth century BC to the third century AD, allows the rhetoric about earliest childhood in Roman texts to be more broadly contextualized and reveals the socio-cultural developments that took place in parent-child relationships over this period. Presenting a fresh perspective on archaeological and historical debates, the volume refutes the notion that high infant mortality conditioned Roman parents not to engage in the early life of their children or to view them, or their deaths, with indifference, and concludes that even within the first weeks and months of life Roman children were invested with social and gendered identities and were perceived as having both personhood and value within society.

It includes general publications on the Greek text — editions, language, translators' techniques, textual criticism, Septuagint manuscripts from Qumran and the use of the Septuagint in Ancient Judaism (Philon, Josephus) and Christianity (New Testament and Patristica). Particular studies are then classified by the individual books of the Bible, followed by literature on Oriental and Latin versions derived from the Septuagint. The studies on the illustrations of the Septuagint are included at the end. This reference tool will be indispensable for scholars or students interested in Bible, Judaism and Christianity in Late Antiquity.
