EXTRAIT de Le Monsieur de San Francisco Un monsieur de San Francisco — personne à Naples ni à Capri n’a retenu son nom — se rendait dans l’Ancien Monde pour deux années entières, avec sa femme et sa fille, sans autre but que de se distraire. Il croyait fermement avoir le droit de prendre du repos, de se donner de l’agrément, de faire un long voyage avec tout le confort désirable ; et Dieu sait ce qu’il s’accordait encore ! Ce qui l’affermissait dans cette conviction, c’était, d’abord, qu’il était riche, ensuite qu’il ne faisait que d’entrer dans la vie, bien qu’âgé de cinquante-huit ans. Jusqu’à présent il n’avait point vécu, tout au plus avait-il existé, d’une manière à vrai dire très sortable, mais en tournant, quoi qu’il en fût, toutes ses espérances vers l’avenir. Il avait travaillé sans relâche — et les coolies qu’il embauchait par milliers savaient fort bien ce que parler ainsi voulait dire ! — jusqu’au jour où, considérant ce qui était fait, il vit que c’était déjà beaucoup, qu’il allait presque de pair avec ceux que, jadis, il avait pris pour modèles : et c’est alors qu’il se donna campos. Chez les gens de sa sorte, il était d’usage de débuter dans les plaisirs par une tournée en Europe, dans l’Inde, en Égypte. Il décida d’en faire autant. C’était lui-même, certes, qu’il prétendait, avant tout, dédommager du labeur de tant d’années ; mais il s’en réjouissait, par la même occasion, pour sa femme et pour sa fille. Sa femme ne s’était jamais révélée particulièrement impressionnable ; mais, voire, toute Américaine sur l’âge est une voyageuse passionnée. Quant à sa fille, demoiselle plutôt mûre et quelque peu maladive, un déplacement était pour elle de toute nécessité : sans parler des avantages qu’il offrait au point de vue santé, faut-il oublier que l’on a parfois, en courant le monde, d’heureuses rencontres ? Installé en France de 1920 à sa mort en 1953, il fut le premier écrivain russe à obtenir le Prix Nobel de littérature, en 1933.
